Fitz ko'd Sharkey twice but was robbed in the first bout. Read Pollacks bio of Fitz and Moira Sharkey's bio of her famous relative. Corbett told Tommy Loughran he only had a handful of fights. Was he lying? Corbett was rapidly slowing and blowing hard,he had shot his bolt trying to finish Fitz ,Fitz was coming on strong, again read Pollack's book.
Sullivan had fought Kilrain in a 75-round fight about 3 years prior not 4 and a half Didn't say he beat Jackson Please provide a source for your Kilrain point There was no Light Heavyweight division at the time so technically he was a HW He did own his own business after boxing though. I forget what exactly it was I'll have to search that up when I have the time. Well it is well-documented that people found him pretentious and felt a prizefighter had no business talking literature. I know that he read a lot in his training camp and haven't read an account of him taking the books out with him in public and quoting them without anyone asking. Perhaps you could provide your source for that. In any case I don't consider that pretentious, as he is not pretending to like it just to create the impression that he's cultured- that would be pretention. He certainly wouldn't have had smart friends if that was the case they would've seen right through him. Good on ya Gramps. It's good to read.
The guy you're arguing with is a lunatic BTW who thinks only fighters from 100 years should be rated highly, this is the same guy that didn't think Hagler or Monzon were top 10 Middleweights of all time. So that gives you a bit of context on who you're arguing with, he's either a troll or a complete head case. He coped so much after i destroyed him in a debate on his other 3 accounts, he kept coming back and quoting me on new alt accounts because i put him on block as i said a complete head case.
Kilrain seemed much heavier than usual for this contest and may not have trained seriously. No in-fighting was allowed, which favoured Corbett .[It was noted that just a few days earlier Kilrain and his troupe of boxers and wrestlers were arrested following the accidental death of one Tom James, a citizen of Dallas, TX.]
He made 3 accounts in one day after getting banned each time this is the same troll that posted here a few months ago "Saintpreem1999" or whatever. He comes back now and again spouting the same nonsense so anytime I recognize his tripe I just put him instantly on ignore.
Kid McCoy a natural middleweight knocked out Peter Maher with his patented corkscrew punch. McCoy weighed in at 163 whilst Maher weighed in at 172. McCoy won a 20-round decision against Joe Choynski and even stopped him one other time. He also has wins against Sandy Ferguson and Gus Ruhlin, two full-fledged heavyweights for the time - both 190+ which was big for the era. Charley Burley (who never weighed much more than 153) fought top LHW contender Oakland Billy Smith and took him to school. Sugar Ray Robinson was beating Joey Maxim handily before he collapsed due to heat exhaustion. Langford (who was usually around 160-170) defeated many that were larger and of similar pedigree: Jim Flynn (in his prime), Sam McVea and Harry Wills (to name a few) - he did beef up as time went along. Mickey Walker defeated Paulino Uzcudun and got a draw against Jack Sharkey. He got wins at LHW against McTigue, Berlenbach (he weighed 162lbs and Berlenbach weighed in at 174) and Rosenbloom (I think he'd probably beefed up by then) Tidbit: "Mickey Walker, world's middleweight champion, failed to knock out Paul Berlenbach, one-time world's light heavyweight champion, but had no trouble winning the decision in 10 savage rounds tonight. Walker, conceding 11 1/4 pounds in weight, gave Berlenbach an unmerciful beating. He floored him in the 4th, falling on top of him when he followed through on his terrific left hook to the chin. From then on, Berlanbach was on the receiving end. Walker rarely missed left hooks to the body. His rights cracked against Paul's chin with distressing effect. Paul made occasional flurries, for the most part he plodded forward, absorbing those terrific wallops without batting an eye." -Associated Press If we look at other weight classes, there is obviously Henry Armstrong. Armstrong fought Barney Ross at 147 weighing under the Lightweight limit and he fought Ceferino Garcia (in the first meeting) at 134lbs while Garcia weighed the full 147. Armstrong was notorious for giving up 10+lbs. When he fought Garcia the 2nd time (at middleweight) he weighed in at 142 and fought Garcia at 153, he was robbed of the victory. You could say that thats a light-Welterweight v a Light-Middleweight but its still impressive. Armstrong was pretty much the smaller version of Greb, a pressure fighter who wouldn't give his opponent room to breathe. Kid Lavigne (who had a similar style to Greb and Armstrong) defeated Joe Walcott who himself was also notorious for fighting bigger men. Of course there's Billy Conn giving up almost 30lbs to Joe Louis and making it to the 13th before being kayoed Just some that came to mind.
