Surprised to see that most people don’t consider him to be an ATG middleweight despite the length and dominance of his reign and his quality by any reasonable eye test. So how many middleweights do you rank ahead of him?

I personally consider GGG a top 10-15 ATG Middle weight. Based on impact in the division in his particular era as well as H2H. Off the top of my head I'd put. Greb, Hagler, Monzon, Robinson and Bhop ahead of him.

Just three clearly better: Greb, Hagler and Monzon.

GGG might have established himself as the best ever (except for Greb), but he was mismanaged in his 20s and avoided in his early 30s.

hmm good question. I haven't made a list myself yet so I'm just gonna name some middleweights I'd rate higher off the top of my head. This "list" isn't ordered. It is just the order that they came to my head. I hope to make a top 15 for each of the 8 classical weight divisions but that's gonna take a long time and is future me's problem.

    Greb
    Robinson
    Hagler
    Fitzsimmons
    Monzon
    Ketchel
    Papke
    Hopkins
    Steele
    Gibbons
    Ryan
    Williams
    Tiger
    Burley
    Lamotta
    Walker
    Giardello
    Dillon
Flowers depending on how you wanna deal with controversial decisions

And maybe I'm getting a bit wacky with it but Griffith might have done more at middle than GGG which is weird to think about.

    I mean wins over

    Tiger
    Archer
    Benvenuti
    Briscoe

Maybe I'm forgetting some people but for now I'll go with GGG being the 22nd or so greatest middleweight.

    Thanks man.

I mean when you get rid of the actual hard part of having to order it, ATG lists are pretty easy.

In terms of whatever criteria you think determines a boxer’s greatness. Some people think subjective head to head is a big part of that; others don’t think it should matter much at all.

Even if he is top 20 thats a huge accomplished guven middleweight is one of the most stacked divisions in boxing history.

I know many do not count RJJ as a middleweight as he did not stay long at the weight but when you beat bhop where else is there to go?

I do find it strange that some do not have him in their lists - in the mid 90s he was supernatural and I can't see GGG doing anything with him.

Depending on your criteria its possible that he doesn't make top 10 - middleweight is THAT deep. I personally do have him in the lower half of the top ten at middleweight.
