I voted Tyson without thinking, my head says Foreman is all wrong for him, but I’ll stick with my pick
What are we calling prime for Foreman? Physical prime Foreman, I'm taking Tyson, comeback foreman with the experience and pacing.... I'm not so sure
IMO - Foreman (although I realize Tyson is no Frazier). This fantasy fight is also an eternal question for me: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/prime-mike-tyson-88-vs-prime-george-foreman-73.679611/ Tyson's peak is undoubtedly 1988 (the prime lasts a bit longer), Foreman's peak is 1973, and the first half of 1974. I'm personally more inclined to favor Foreman in this fantasy fight. 1987 (Mike Tyson in prime, but not yet peak) Mike Tyson won the WBA belt in a fight with James Smith, and the IBF belt in a fight with Tony Tucker. And both Tyson's opponents met the end of the fight on their feet. Foreman, however, is a different kind of beast than the aforementioned two. Not only do I think prime Foreman (in 1987) would have seen the end of the fight with Tyson on his feet, but he would have won. Foreman has a better chin than either of them. On the other hand, if James Smith and Tony Tucker were sent in a time machine to 1973 to challenge Foreman for the title, I don't think they would have seen the end of the fight on their feet. But that's just my opinion.
Foreman all day every day. The worst matchup for Tyson against a guy he cannot intimidate or out slug.
Yep. I’ve always said 2nd career Foreman was better than young Foreman. Not as fan friendly to watch maybe! But overall better. Old Foreman has a shot to land something late on Tyson and pour it on for a finish. Young George would fight fire with fire and get caught like against Lyle. Only Tyson (Prime Tyson) was a better finisher than Ron. Hit harder too.
Foreman for me, horrible style match up for Tyson. Foreman had a physical style, much like how he pushed and pulled Frazier around he would do the same with Tyson. Because Tyson fights squared up, he's easily pushed back unlike someone in a more bladed stance. Plenty of fighters gave Tyson problems by being physical with him, Tucker, Holyfield, Douglas and Lewis. That squared up stance while making Tyson great at cutting off the ring on opponents who want to move away, against fighters that wanted to manhandle him it exposed as weakness in his style and Foreman was great at controlling faster but smaller opponents with his techniques, many of which he picked up from sparring with Liston the same Liston who crushed Patterson who was also trained by Tyson's trainer D'Amato. That along with Foreman's power, body punching and especially uppercuts for me gives Foreman a clear style advantage. Tyson would no doubt have some success, his speed and power would trouble Foreman but in the end Foreman constantly pushing, framing, posting, collar tying would leave Tyson unable to set to throw as he's constantly pushed out of position and eventually backed up. One of Foreman's big uppercuts would likely hurt him and Foreman then piles it on and grinds him down and stops him.
Foreman Tyson resembles Frazier a lot both in size and style. Fighters like that were tailor made for Big George, unlike boxers/movers like Ali and Young (and potentially Holmes)
