It’s hard to envisage Tyson not being able to get on the inside and land a cheeky uppercut or sharp hook in the first few rounds. Wilder is pretty good though when he’s fighting defensive, he leans on the ropes well, he knows where he is in the ring even when he’s dazed.
The thing people forget about Tyson is he had a very solid chin. Its going to take a guy putting a ton of pressure on him to stop him late. This is why a medium punching power guy like Holy could wear him down but I wouldn't give massive one hitter guys like Wilder, Tua or Shavers much of a chance. Wilder also has no chance of outboxing him.
I don't think Mike would get caught flush with anything as telegraphed as one of Wilders "bombs" in any case... I question whether he has the power that's often claimed in any case, but even if he does there's no way he's landing flush here.
Seems the creator of this thread either wasn't alive during or has not seen Tyson fights from 85-88. If he had, this thread would not have been created.
I don't think so Razor Ruddock was a huge puncher and he hit Tyson with his "Smash" punch a few times and Tyson was never really effected by it. Tyson had a very good chin and took single shots very well, in all his losses he took alot on punishment before he finally succumbed. Single shots won't get it done vs Mike Tyson especially in his prime, Tyson does too many things better than Wilder defence, handspeed, combination punching, and power in either hand not just right hand. Tyson KO's Wilder within 6 rounds for me, the only advantage Wilder has is height but he doesn't throw uppercuts to catch smaller man. Isn't physically strong enough to tie Tyson on the inside, and his right hand isn't good weapon vs shorter man with a great defense, who will get underneath it and counter him with devastating body shots.
It would have been a very easy stylistic match up for Mike. Wilder has no great jab or inside game. Wilder’s height would have been a disadvantage to him in this specific fight. Wilder needs time and space to land his huge power shots. Mike was only 5’10, and even lower fighting out of a crouched position, with his great ‘Bob and weave/Peak a boo’ style. Mike would have provided Wilder with such an elusive target, he’d never have been able to have gotten set. Mike would have slipped inside of his range with ease. Mike would never have been there for a Wilder power punch. A terrible match up for Wilder.
Great post. Wilder wouldn’t even have had a height advantage. Obviously he did, but I mean that it wouldn’t in any way have been advantageous to him in the ring against Mike’s style.
