Does Luis Ortiz have one more big fight in him?

Now Ortiz v Povetkin would’ve been an interesting fight a few years ago

LOL at the ******ed Brits trying to **** on Ortiz. It's been well known that he was one of the most heavily avoided fighters in the heavyweight division for years, all up until Wilder fought him. I think his age has caught up with him, he has maybe one more good fight left, but he's still a dangerous opponent for anyone.

Interesting reading but your view on the articles seems to be lacking context.

Yes Povetkin turned down the mandated fight for the WBA regular fight with Ortiz but he was coming off a loss and probably needed an easier return opponent than the undefeated Ortiz, also the article clearly states the money wasn't right, so yes Ortiz was seen as dangerous but also financially not lucrative so too much risk for too little reward.

Joyce's trainer said he wasn't ready which to be fair Joyce was 6-0 at the time and Ortiz 30-1, which seems pretty reasonable. But Joyce's team shouldn't have talked about Ortiz to start with if they were not ready to fight him, that was a bad look at the time. Create a story about a fight with Ortiz then say he wasn't ready. So while it looks like duck, in reality it was a poor attempt to try and build Joyce off of Ortiz's name at the time.

Later on there was of course an insinuation from Joyce they offered a fight to Ortiz and Ortiz didn't want it while Ortiz says there was no offer. We don't know what really happened but the way that Joyce simply insinuated it and didn't outright declare it for me makes me dout there was any offer.

Yes Takam pulled out of a proposed fight with Ortiz but the article says the negotiations failed at a late stage so nothing had even been signed, they were still negotiate terms a month out from the fight. So I wouldn't classify that as a duck more that again the money to fight Ortiz wasn't there and so Ortiz wasn't able to secure a fight. That comes down to Matchroom failing Ortiz as I believe he had just signed with them on a fight by fight basis.

Nothing in that article says he didn't want a fight with Ortiz just says Ortiz will KO Scott. The idea that Chisora would duck anyone given the fighters he has fought from Fury, Helenius, Vitali, Whyte, Parker, Takam, Pulev etc. The man has made a career of literally fighting anyone as long as the money is right.

I know Hearn tried to make Chisora vs Ortiz in early 2022 but nothing really came of it, Ortiz fought Ruiz instead and Chisora fought Pulev. I don't see that as a case of ducking one another as both went on to fight quality opposition, more likely again a case of money being a factor. Ortiz probably made more to fight Ruiz than he would have Chisora and Ruiz was a better opponent so can see why the fight didn't happen.

I agree that Ortiz was a high risk, low reward fighter and that in part is why his resume is lacking because even those willing to fight him would be put off by the payday, in the end boxing is a business. But Ortiz did have opportunities, he could have fought Ustinov in a WBA regular eliminator in 2012. But twice declined the fight, maybe because Ustinov's promoter won the purse bid and he didn't feel like risking it in Russia but he gave a BS excuse about testing for the fight which is ironic considering he would fail a test himself later on.

He was Joshua's mandatory only had to wait his turn and probably would of made around 5 mill like the other Joshua mandatories but instead decided to fight Wilder for 500K, likely thinking Wilder was an easier path to a title.

Then of course there was the 7-8 mill he was offered to fight Joshua when Miller failed a doping test. Again some BS excuse saying his management didn't tell him the offer and they made a mistake turning it down.

Lol at some cretin thinking it's only 'Brits' crapping on Ortiz for his absolutely dire resume.

    That's not how it works.

You don't just get to shout "I'm being avoided" and have it magically come true.

If a fighter can't get good fights then there's something they're not bringing to the table - mostly that they're either not a suitable level of competition or that they're not good value for money (demanding more than they're worth, etc)... or they're just not looking for good fights, of course

In other words, if a guy can't get good fights then he's doing something wrong.

He wasn't being avoided before Wilder, he just wasn't accepting his place in the division and working on improving it, he was expecting to be treated as special when he hadn't proved himself to have earned that right.

I've always said that contrary to the "real recognizes real" line that's popular in certain circles, it's "fraud recognizes fraud" that shows itself time and again - Wilder, a fraud of a champion using a belt to knock over cans and running from serious challengers in good condition, that guy didn't fight Ortiz because he thought Ortiz was any good - he fought Ortiz because he could see a guy who (just like him) had a ridiculously inflated reputation considering what he'd actually achieved.

A fight with Takam would be a solid fight between two hard past prime fighters...

"Povetkin was coming off a decision loss to Wlad and the money wasn't right for such a dangerous opponent, so Povetkin had to fight Charr, Takam, Wach etc."

"Joyce was only a 33 year old Olympic silver medallist, he wasn't ready for a 40+, post-Wilder 1 Ortiz, not a duck"

"Takam pulled out on late notice to go for Duhaupas instead which also didn't happen but that's not a duck because negotiations failed/not enough money"

"Chisora wouldn't avoid Ortiz, even though he's said that fighting for him is about the money and told Hearn in an interview earlier this year that he didn't want to fight a 44 year old Ortiz because he's a hard night at the office"

I found the video for you, skip to 4 mins:

    This content is protected

"Ortiz only had to wait his turn to fight Joshua as a 38 year old fighter who signed with Matchroom in 2016, it's not like they would have gone for Wlad, then Pulev/Takam, then Parker in a unification in 2018 and whoever else instead, while giving Ortiz the likes of Allen rather than Whyte"

"I believe that Ortiz ducked a 10/1-15/1 underdog who'd been schooled by Pulev and quit on a jab because Ortiz was worried about going to Russia, despite Ortiz having fought in eight nations and never at home as a pro, against far more dangerous fighters as a clear underdog"

"I believe that Ortiz would turn down £7-8 million to fight Joshua on short notice because he's terrified (unlike Martin and Molina), believed he had minimal chance and would rather fight Wilder who'd already KO'd him for £500,000 instead"

No attempt to defend Joshua-conqueror Ruiz from trying to get out of a fight with 43 year old, 2 KO defeats Ortiz to fight kickboxer Spong in Mexico instead.

Fury said that Ortiz was "a very good fighter" but he had no interest in fighting him "unless he beat Wilder" because "no one cares about Cubans, not even Cubans."

They all gave Ortiz a wide berth due to risk-reward factors. It's clear to see, regardless of "context". The context is that skilled southpaw puncher Ortiz was dangerous and would have probably beaten most of them.

A title fight against Wilder is Fury's biggest fight in 8 years, so surely that makes Ortiz fighting Wilder for a title a big fight?

Also he fought Ruiz in a title Eliminator, that is also a big fight.

Ortiz IMO is still a top 10 worth contender. He isn't too far off Ruiz level, and did well vs Wilder, arguably should have won the first fight.

Feels like his best years were wasted a bit with promoter issues, and typical Cuban inactivity.

Part of it is that Lewis never fought a southpaw and dropped the IBF belt to sidestep Byrd, so they inherently don't like Ortiz. Another is that Ortiz is GOAT right hand American Wilder's best win, so they have to try to discredit him. Hearn signed him in 2016 to keep him away from Joshua and Whyte, so those fanbases don't like him. Plus Ortiz outboxed and stopped Jennings, swatted Thompson down and was as good as anyone Wlad beat, so Wlad fans don't like him.

At the same time they fluff up Povetkin (a known Ortiz dodger), who is "safe" as he performed terribly against Wlad (Peter coped a lot better with Wlad's grappling by fouling back), got KO'd by Joshua and looked pedestrian against 90's holdovers Donald and Byrd.

Joshua-conqueror Ruiz was trying to duck a 43 year old, 2 KO defeats Ortiz to fight kickboxer Spong in Mexican instead, which gives us an insight into how avoided Ortiz was when he was undefeated at 38 or 35.

Interesting you mention Takam. ‘Takam level’ is exactly where I would place Ortiz name, at any stage of his career.

    Good scrap, 50/50

A few years ago, like the version that fought Whyte? I'd back Ortiz at that point as Povetkin was totally shot.

Povetkin vs Ortiz in like 2017/2018 I'd back Povetkin.

If You are avoided because u are soo risk fight u must take Your chance and go for mandatory position. That's simple as ...
If You got fight for WBA regular with dude u will be favorite u just take it, win stupid bell and wait. That was his chance to guarantee himself fight with WBA Super champion in future.

If u are avoided u take even last minute chance special when u can earn 7 x bigger cash than u ever had.

If u got again chance being mandatory u take Hrgovic fight...

He got his chance but he choose to be Wilder b... all time. End of the story. Nothing change here that Chisora dont want fight him or Powietkin say "no" after lost
