Bob Foster always failed at heavyweight, 180 lbs is heavyweight, it is past the 175 lbs limit. Bob has lost to Ernie Terrell, Doug Jones, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali.

 

You are probably right buddy but check his pro record, he appeared to not be able to take a true heavyweights punch.

GGG has an excellent chin. But, he is certainly hittable. In this fight we would finally see the limit of GGG's solid chin. Foster by KO.

OOfff hard fight for Golovkin here. Foster hit probably harder than anybody GGG faced and he was rangey as well. If you had to pick a guy to crack Golovkin's otherwise granite chin Foster would be a good pick.

On the other hand Golovkin has his footwork and jab to disrupt the offense of Foster and he's not nearly as hittable as people think. Against featherfists GGG liked to show off his whiskers basically mocking the other guy's punching power. Against big hitters like Lemieux, Canelo and Stevens he was much less face first and elusive. In fact if you look at his early fights he was defensively minded and quite difficult to land on.

I think this fight really hinges on how easily Foster can hurt Golovkin. If GGG can't take the power he's in deep waters. If he can take a flush hit or two and keep ticking then he might have a decent chance because I think his all round skills and footwork are better than Foster's. Still he is the smaller man here.

 

I'm intrigued by this match. It might be closer than one might think. Foster was rangey but not too thick. At one point he weighed actually about the same as GGG on fight night - 173/4lb. I've watched a bit of his bout against an old Dick Tiger to refresh my memory and frankly I was surprised to see Tiger do so well. Yeah, he crumbled at the end but he lands a considerable amount of leather on Foster who doesn't exhibit much head movement or slipping skills. If old man Tiger can manage that, Golovkin might do more, given that he actually has a great jab himself. Check it out:

I saw that fight live on television on May 24 1968, KO 4 for Bob Foster, who reigned as champion until he retired as champion in 1974.

 

We have no evidence of Golovkin's performances above Middleweight other than the 3rd fight vs Canelo, in which he didn't look good but that could be his age aswell.

But since Golovkin never moved up successfully, and is 0-1 above Middleweight then I'll go with Foster by KO. Remember what happened to another Middleweight who moved up to fight Foster in Dick Tiger who was durable aswell.

I personally think Foster is a little overrated however I've always found it odd how much flack he gets for his heavyweight run. He lost to Ali and Frazier, is that really as legacy ruining as people make it out to be?

 

They are in different tiers. Foster is a deserved Hall of Famer, GGG shouldn't be a Hall of Famer.
Foster would most likely beat GGG too, better fighter, much better fighter if you ask me. GGG was overrated because of a Boxing "off season" where there wasn't really agressive KO artists around and he filled that void, I GUESS. Boxing people also like soviet guys for whatever reason there is a aura among them.

He is not an ATG though, and I did not forget that many guys that rated (and still rate) him highly were acting like he would beat Canelo easily, which was not the reality, at all, to say the least here.
