Alright, we have Velma from Scooby Doo over here.

Read the rest of the posts, I don't care if Toney had foreign accent syndrome two days before the Williams fight, it doesn't really matter, if we start to do that resumes are only a matter of who has the best excuses.

Your resume is as good as the excuses made by your best opponents ?

Yes, thank you, I love how he used to fight back in the day, such a good combination puncher.

There are points where Roy Jr decided to show off with a higher output. Look at the seventh round — it’s as complete a schooling of a major P4P fighter as you’ll see.

You missed the point, Shaggy, which was simply that you people watch the highlight reel finish on YouTube and just assume the performance was fabulous. It wasn't.

Underrated? As always, depends on who you ask.

Toney displayed a capacity to not get ****ed up by ridiculously bigger dudes at the world level at a relatively advanced age and state of decay. That's a bad mf.

RJJ made him look silly in his physical prime.

Both seriously bad men in the company of greats.

Joppy was a good one too. The Pascal fights r the most action packed he's been at an advanced age imho.

    Shaggy lol
I imagine you are talking about the Hopkins fight, if you win without any controversy, how come is not a fabulous performance ? Andre Ward didn't make it too pretty when he beat Carl Froch, still it was a brilliant performance where he was at no risk of losing at any point.

Relative fight time physical condition aside, Roy besting Toney is the equivalent of Ezzard beating Archie - both fighters are the equivalent of them two for their generation. Ezz was of course, more technically sound than Roy, but you get my point.

@JohnThomas1 B-Hop was clearly brilliant from as early as his 10th progressional fight. His skillset was demonstrably good, his combinations were good - yes, Roy was the more experienced fighter but Hop was no slouch. Not suggesting that you're saying he was - I fall slightly on the side of it being a somewhat underrated win and caveat that Hop didn't have the ring generalship/experience at that stage that he would need to catch the lightning in a bottle that was the equivalent of beating Roy. That B-Hop became a better fighter is without a shadow of a doubt.

Here's the thing for me - Roy was that good, no great of his generation was capable of beating him best day for best day until he slowed down, even post the Benn and G-Man fight when he became less aggressive, his talent was that off the charts that he would make lots of ATGs look ordinary.

I maintain my stance, Roy could be argued to be top 3 H2H from 160 - 175 lbs and for one night, 12 rounds and in the right conditions, some might argue him top of the tree.

We mostly align. I think it gets a bit overrated on name as i often see it flung out as if he beat prime Hopkins. He certainly beat Toney in his best years as he wasn't P4P #2 for nothing.

Hopkins did have some nice things in place early and the foundations were starting to show but he just got better and better and was one of those guys a little slow to really hit his straps. Obviously he didn't have near the talent Roy did.....and that goes for about everyone else.

I completely agree with your assessments of Roy - the guy was a beast. I mean what fighters have been more talented post 1980 even? He's a freak.

A masterclass from RJJ, a rare example of an ATG toying with a fellow ATG.

    ??

We're talking about Toney-Williams. Are you a schizo or is Engrish not your first language?

Another solid fighter he beat was Virgil Hill.
I can't say Roy's record was stacked, but he beat a lot good fighters, usually fairly easily too.

So was Reggie Johnson. First and only other man to knock down James Toney, 3 division champ who never lost convincingly, only razor close decisions until Jones.
