If the ref doesn't do a long count on Buster Douglas what's next for Tyson?

It's been argued that when Tyson knocked Douglas down he was granted a long count by the ref. This is not to debate if it was or wasn't one but let's say Tyson edges out the win in the Douglas fight. Where does he go from there?

His personal life had been imploding for years already by the time of the fight, if it wasn't Douglas who would have given Mike his first 0 and when?

 

I think Tyson still sends the next few years in prison win or not vs Douglas. Tyson gets out of prison with his record intact, but still gets defeated by the Real Deal later. We just knock the Douglas loss off the record and I still think history plays out the same way.

 

He would've fought Holyfield next and the winner would depend on how much Tyson could turn the clock back+the ref.

 

Assuming he beats Douglas & never goes to jail, I seem to remember talk of a world tour or something. People were kind of ticked after he blasted Carl Williams in 93 seconds. The idea was to have him fight in various countries where he’d be easier to sell than in the US. Damiani in Italy, Adilson Rodriguez in Brazil, Ruddock in Canada. Then maybe back to the states for Foreman & then Holyfield. If he beat them, you still had the young guys, Bowe, Lewis, Mercer, Morrison, & Seldon. I know I saw an article or something about that somewhere.

 

Fire his whole corner for not having an enswell first of all then go back to Catskill and train with Rooney.

 

It’s funny before the Douglas loss I’ve read on this forum they were considering doing a 2v1 PPV - how true is that? I couldn’t say but it’s believable.

I will not comment on the "long count" but the rest of the question. If Tyson won in Tokyo we would be watching Tyson Vs. Holyfield before Tyson's prison.

 

The ref didn’t do a long count. No longer than what Tyson got. Or a few ATG’s over history got. As for what’s next it’s Holyfield. Mandatory, deserved or not. What happens that fight is another discussion.

 

Yeah, that's the narrative, but still he smashed the guys he faced before going to prison. In this scenario, though, he faces Holy later in 1990. He loses that one.

 

Also, Douglas only temporarily derailed Tyson-Holyfield. It was set for before he went to prison, but he hurt his ribs in training (I think) and pulled out.

 

Mike wasn't doing well between the ears at that time. He was on a downward spiral eventually falling to pieces. If he goes right to Hoylfield he gets beat. Tyson still had ability but he went through so much personal drama (much of it created by him) much of it leeches around him. He was just too young to cope with it and maintain his game in the ring.
Mike could beat most heavyweights on cruise control but Hoylfield isn't one of them.
