His left jab was pretty solid. Not what I would consider in the upper echelon but still pretty good

Cooney had an above average left jab. He was able to to use it effectively against Holmes at times in their fight.
Above average left jab, devastating left hook and uppercut.

I’m one of the people who has always felt that Gerry Cooney never fulfilled his potential. Not that he was ever made to be an ATG but I think he was just as good or better than some of those alphabet guys of his generation

His jab was very good and gets underrated. What stood out and is forgotten nowadays is just how powerful that jab was. He busted some people up with it.

Very good jab, overall excellent and very versatile left hand, and for a tall guy Cooney loved to punch to the body.

He had a crushing lefthook to the body and if I am not mistaken was left handed.

I met Gerry once. Just a genuinely sweet, nice person. I asked him about the fights with Spinks and Foreman. He said he was still dealing with demons when he faced Spinks, but he was in better shape against Foreman. The problem was he thought he could take George out early and he got nailed. Now he lives in Scotch Plains, N.J. and has a happy life and marriage.

I believe it. Spinks version of Cooney was by far the worst version of him.

There's an interview out there somewhere where Cooney was very disappointed with the whole Spinks effort and said he was in all sorts at the time. Accepted the Foreman loss tho which is all in line with his comments to you.
