Ward + headbutts + low lows + Weeks + judges lost to Kovalev.

The biggest mistake he and many of his comrades make is expecting they'll get a fair shake over there when history strongly begs to differ.

The fact that Ward refused to allow a single neutral judge for the rematch after Kovalev had

Afforded him the once in a lifetime golden opportunity to win all three of his belts off of him in one fell swoop in the first fight

In his own country where it was stacked in his favour

With his obligatory home ref (32 fights, 32 home refs, 23 from Cali) to allow him to fight by a set of rules he penned with his own hand in tow

An absolutely scandalous amount of home judges

And even worse, this was after Ward's home judges had robbed Kovalev of them in the highly controversial first fight which the vast vast majority had him losing

    Says it all

I still can't believe people conveniently ignore that

He refused to allow a single neutral judge to be appointed for the rematch when Team Kovalev quite understandably wanted a fairer shake after Kovalev had been criminally robbed of all his world titles in the highly controversial first fight

World titles he had to make enormous sacrifices to get his hands on

Including having to uproot and leave his country and family behind

Adapt to a foreign country and completely different culture

    Learn a new language

Live in the middle of the sticks for ages with a group of other fighters

And fight for free for the first three years and 18 fights of his career after being turned down by every major promoter in the US

Been thinking about Kovalev vs Ward 2 a lot recently, given the vociferous and pedantic clarifications as to what a low blow is.
By the metric that has been used to justify the Dubois shot on Usyk as illegal, how does anyone justify Wards shots on Kovalev as being legal or “borderline”?!

serious question - I’m interested in the wild subjectivity at play.

I don’t mean who was better. A side B side is who is the promotional favorite. And Ward was willing and able to dictate all his demands to gain the advantage.

    Aha,
So you think his lifestyle & being on the wrong side of 30 had nothing to do with his demise?

    … interesting.

Pimp, you're a good poster and a good dude, but you know Kovalev deserved the nod in the first fight.

As for the OP's question, I believe it's quite possible that Kovalev had slipped a bit before the first Ward fight. The power was still there, of course, but his work did not seem quite as neat as it had been.

You forget Ward was actually not at his best in the first fight either but found a way and the will to win. The truth is formidable fighter Kovalev was, Andre was the better fighter and better ring general who worked Kovalev out and took his soul. We really should not be looking for excuses!

Ward was more past it and above his best weight. But somehow the old warrior pulled through against his fellow undefeated. One of the greatest of my lifetime. Too bad Golovkin wasn't willing to move up for Ward like Ward was for Kovalev, oh well. But maybe they'd both been better earlier. Only God knows. ...And maybe his son.

I thought the first fight was close could have went either way. His passion for drinking vodka during his boxing career aged him in dog years, so he could have been compromised going into those fights. His ex trainer and Wards camp made references to his drinking problems during the build up.

That’s why we call Golovkin Lil g or lower case g because he did not have the cojones to go up and face Ward.

Drinking Vodka did not affect him until he faced off against the Son of God showing that the devil is a liar and evil old darkness cannot withstand the shining light of God.

Ward was never an A side. That's why he couldn't even fill arenas in Oakland lol

If Dubois was the A side the punch would be considered legit, I don't like the way Usyk reacts after being touched in any part of his abdomen he complains alot about any borderline shots.

As for Ward/Kovalev 2 some of the shots were controversial, but I think it was apparent Ward was breaking him down with actual legit body shots in middle rounds. And you could see Ward was taking over in the fight after the 5th round or so.
