Jeff Fenech vs Naoya Inoue

Fenech was robbed in the first fight and was recently awarded the fight and belt retrospectively.

It was one of the biggest disgraces in the history of boxing.

By the time the rematch happened, Fenech was broken. The outright and blatant corruption in Vegas destroyed him. At his best he beats Nelson 9 times out of 10. And he beats Inoue too.

Literally everyone who has seen the fight knows it was a robbery. Everyone.

It was the most disgustingly corrupt decision I have ever seen.

 

I genuinely think the disgusting events of the first fight destroyed Fenech mentally. IIRC if the fight against Nelson in Vegas was judged by non-criminals then Fenech would have been the first undefeated 4 weight world champion in history.

He was an ATG, a legendary fighter. He beats any fighter alive today at 120lb or less.

As a kid, I loved the guy. My old man saw a lot of boxing, was even friends with Lionel Rose for a while. I remember when Fenech fought for the IBF title v Shingaki, in around his 6th pro fight. I'm not googling, I'm going by memory, I reckon we had just watched Lester Ellis beat Rod Sequenan, the night before. Anyway, first time, we had watched Fenech as a pro. After one or two rounds my Dad is talking like " ****, he's the best aussie fighter, I have ever seen". Pretty good call.

 

That's correct, at that time, he would have been the first to do it undefeated and the quickest to do it also.

 

I've still got that post fight presser on vhs. I watched it about 6 months back. Teary eyed, retiring virtually 100% because of his damaged hands. I remember he tried the rugby league.

 

He definitely was never the same after it. That's for sure.

 

You're right. He announced his retirement in the post-fight press conference, not in the ring. I remember it clearly now. He was blubbering at the time. Onya, Jeffrey! He would never officially win another world title fight. Well, not until the WBC gave him their Jr Lightweight belt last year. I maintain he wasn't the same fighter upon his return. He was dropped & hurt by Mario Martinez before the first Azumah Nelson fight.

 

Those were some good days mate. Tag along with my Dad, to the local, drink some rasberry lemonades or sarsparillas and watch Jeff go mad on some dude on Sky tv.

 

Can’t judge till inoue is done with career.

 

Inoue has past him for sure, in my opinion. Inoue is doing crazy things. Fenech is HOF, Inoue is 'living legend' status.

 

Can’t argue with that but need to see inoue at his higher weights.

 

I think Nelson knocking out Fenech spark out in his hometown in Australia puts bed to that. In the first fight which I scored 116-112 for Azumah Nelson he was suffering from a bad bout of malaria but he made no excuses gave Fenech an immediate rematch in his country and the whole world saw what happened. Fenech was not the same from then on, how could he be when he received the full Nelson arsenal and power. To be fair Fenech a genuinely great man made no excuses like you are doing on his behalf.
