You're wrong. Every other boxing org does the same thing. Everyone builds their guy who sells the most tickets up, slowly. Putting him in with the right type of opponents. This is a business first, sport second, PBC can be guilty of it sure, so can every other org.

 

But it still works for them. They get plenty of money, dont care about legacies and they have inflated ego's.

They "guarantee" the fights and X and Y amount based on PPV, gate money, advertising etc

They then have to do their job promoting to first break even minimum and then secondly become profitable.

If they fail to do it properly then they lose out on revenue and thus profits and ultimately operate at a loss

Top Rank are "successful" because they play it ultra safe and piggyback off ESPN who do a lot of heavy lifting. In the case of Beterbiev-Smith they gave the promo to Eye of the Tiger Promotions who in turn didn't even bother to upload the first conference to YouTube. Instead, some fan downloaded from Facebook and uploaded it onto Youtube.
