Bernard Hopkins vs Carlos Monzon at 160 ?

Got nothin' but love for The Executioner/The Alien, but that's a tall order. From what I can see, Monzon is even more ruthless and methodical than BHop. Came up even tougher and seems was an actual psycopath as opposed to Hopkins who appears to be ruthless to serve a practical purpose rather than to serve some ruined/broken internal piece like Monzon seemed to be.

Prime for prime, I don't think Bhop gets stopped (he's too tough), but he loses a legit decision. How about RJJr at MW or Toney?

 

Monzon knocks out Nunn and McClellan. Beats Toney and McCallum. 50-50 vs Hagler

 

Roided Roy wins UD. Monzon won't be able to corner nor catch while Roy will take potshots all night assuming that he does not get too ambitious in search of KO, especially with that suspect chin.

Man I like Hagler. He's like my 2nd favorite fighter of all time. Ok. So trying to be objective. Monzon is meaner. And that's sayin' something. But I think it's the only advantage Monzon has here. I'll take Marvelous by clear UD in 15 or 12 take your pick.

 

Monzon was a great middleweight no doubt, big, mean, great jab, knew how to manhandle smaller middleweights who wanted to get inside by framing. Also a decent counter puncher and really knew how to use his size, plus he had great stamina and was tough as nails.

But I have to favour Hopkins. Monzon was used to being the taller middleweight but Hopkins was taller and their reach were similar. I think Hopkins faster feet and hands and right hand lead vs Monzon's busy jab would see him out box Monzon to win a decision. I just don't think Monzon has the style to beat Hopkins. You have to be fast enough hands to get off first and fast enough feet to be gone to avoid the counter to beat BHop like RJJ and Taylor did.

 

You have to add in same day weigh ins. Bhop benefited from not having that.
In the 70's he would be a light heavyweight rather than a middleweight.
Think it would be a boring jab clinch fight though.
Normally I would pick monzon by ud but since hopkins has reach and heught advantage and is very adaptable im picking bhop by close decision.

 

True for most fighters the same day weigh in would be an issue but Hopkins usually weighed in the mid 160's in the ring in his prime years. Later in his career he would come in at 168-169lbs like in the 3rd Allen, De La Hoya and Taylor fights so he always comfortably made 160 and didn't rehydrate a lot expect for perhaps the Oscar fight because he came in so low. Yes he was tall but the man had a tiny 27.5 inch waist at middleweight. So this idea he was some light heavy who boiled down to 160 is clearly false, his ring weights are proof of that.

So I don't think same day weigh in's would effect Hopkins like most modern fighters because he never cut much weight in his prime. Monzon for example stepped into the ring against Napoles at 169 so basically the same weight Hopkins did when he was 38-40 years old at 160.
