Seeing as Max managed to beat Joe Louis, one of the greatest punchers in history, do you think his chances against Foreman are more than slim? If so, how do you think Schmeling can win?

If he can hit Foreman with the number of right hands he hit Louis with

    Hi Buddy.
We have a rather uncouth saying over here in the UK goes something like this " If my granny had balls, she would be my grandad " if being the operative word.
    stay safe Jake.

He does, remember, he was a very good counter-puncher, young Foreman was a careless puncher sometimes, wide, so you put the two things together and yes he does have a chance.

If the question were “ is it impossible ? “ then my answer would be no. Would it be likely ? I can’t say that I’d give Schmeling much of a chance. But there’s always a slight possibility. Max Schmeling was a great fighter with a lot of ring smarts. And George Foreman like all fighters had his own set of flaws. My biggest problem here is that I can’t see Max taking too many punches from George.

I also see Schmeling being able to counter Foreman's often slow, wide swings. Schmeling might actually be a bad matchup for him in some aspects, although I wouldn't favour him.

In one of his weakest performances on film, he took the hardest punching HW Champion in history, Max Baer, into round ten, in what may have been the Larruper's greatest win.

George Foreman had vastly inferior skills to Madcap Maxie, ridiculously inferior stamina, and did not punch as hard. If Big George can't get the German out within five rounds, he's dead. I don't think he can with the Charley Burley stance and countering Schmeling used. Foreman was just far too wide open, and Schmeling was no Goyo Peralta in terms of quality.

He's going to hit George with a LOT more right hands than he hit the far more defensively proficient Louis with when he was past his prime. The Bomber took the rematch with a fast start, but we don't know how a three bout series might have turned out with each peak for peak. Schmeling was ready for the Louis who destroyed Max Baer when they first squared off. That version of Louis might have killed George, who had NO defense during his youth.

This isn't the mismatch so many will commonly suppose. Jimmy Young countered Foreman into a ten year retirement. Schmeling had considerably more firepower than Jimmy.

Uzcudun had obscene physical strength, and Max dealt with Paulino three times. Uzcudun needed home cooking just to get a draw. Okay, so maybe we can also disregard their third bout in Berlin, but that first match in Yankee Stadium really made Schmeling's name. Foreman's physical strength isn't going to be enough here, and he's so slow that Max will see everything coming.

Slow, wide open slugger versus calculating counter puncher. Yeah, Schmeling has a chance, especially if Foreman can't blast him out quickly.

What's your reasoning for rating Baer above Foreman as a puncher?

A chance? Yes, if he gets Foreman into really deep water.

I don't see that happening. I don't see a Frazier-Norton result because Max wasn't as stubborn and as tailor made physically and stylistically for Foreman as Frazier was, and he could fight backing up unlike Norton. And he's going to hit Foreman a little too. But prime Foreman catches him in about 4 or 5 rounds.
