Top 5 Lennox Lewis wins

I do not think it's right to consider the McCall fight any kind of victory. He was completely mentally unwell and should not have been in the ring. Can't blame Lewis he beat the man in front of him on the night but the fight should not have happened.

Golota depends on how valid his excuses were.

 

Two wins stand out for me. Vitali and Grant for two different reasons.
Vitali is his best win IMO. Very few fighters in history beat their heir apparent, even fewer in the shape that Lennox was in. I think it's an outstanding win that has probably been underrated due to the "controversy" around it.
I think the Grant win is massive. Grant was seen as a monster going into that fight and the US fight press were predicting it would be Grant's moment to shine. Lewis mauled him in one of the deadliest performances I have seen. Lewis really was the apex predator that night. Again I think this fight is underrated now, because Grant didn't amount to much, but at the time, this was a dangerous fight for Lewis.
As for the other three, take your pick, the Lion ran through the division as impressively as anyone, so there's a ton of great wins to pick from.

 

Gary Mason: Very underrated win against an extremely dangerous killer puncher who was
35(32 KOs)-0-0 when they met. Lewis had to weather the odd storm or two, while maintaining a modicum of control against his more experienced opponent. In the end Lewis stopped Mason by brutally focusing on his damaged eye, doing what needed to be done.
He came of age that night IMO… marking his entry onto the world stage.

Razor Ruddock: Made short work of a very dangerous world class fighter.

Holyfield 2: Still a tough competitor and any fight with this guy is gonna be mega.

Tyson: A past it Tyson but still a huge, huge name and still a deadly 3-9 minute fighter. Lewis took him apart piece by piece.

Vitali: Lewis’ final fight. His opponent was younger, stronger, bigger (taller and more solid if not heavier!) I mean, and was ready to grab the torch from Lennox. Or so he thought.
But the old man wasn’t ready to hand it over just yet…he hung in there while VK took an early lead. Then LL proceeded to cut Vitali to pieces, retain his title and retire on top of the world.

Great finish to a great career.

Gary Mason gave it away, eh

 

Very good call on Gary Mason. Especially given the early stage Lewis was at in his career.

 

Mason is dependable, if you factor in the stage Lennox was at in his career.

If you'd had Mason, Bruno and Akinwande in your top 3, it would have really given your nationality away. Including McCory would have removed any doubt....

 

I don’t even think Mason would beat Mavrovic.

 

Haha! Yep. I was thinking of finding a way to wedge big Henry in the top 5. But I just couldn’t find a way to justify finding a place for that snoozefest!

 

At the stage Lewis was at, Mason was a tough fight. If I remember rightly, Mason was favourite for the victory in a few bookies.
As for Mavrovic, who knows. But for a 15 fight or so Lewis,fighting Gary Mason was his toughest appointment to date.

 

That fight also shows Lewis didn't have a glass chin as I remember Mason who's a big puncher hit Lewis with some flush shots an Lewis took them just fine.

 

Ironic here because Holyfield could have got the decision in their rematch.
