The huge difference though is Mayweather was the biggest draw in the sport.

No fighter today is in any position to be able to dictate to the broadcaster who and when they fight.

Showtime created this monster when they let Al haymon control everything.

Also I'll add Mayweather did not become the biggest star in the sport because he was unbeaten.

I doubt the Disney corporation wants boxing on their ledger for much longer. ESPN has stuck with it because of inertia, from when they considered their mission to be covering the wide world of sports.

Since they discovered analytics, they've realized that most of their revenue is the college football playoff and NFL hot takes so they're gonna trim the fat.

Just get rid of the automatic runner I say. The pitch clock was the solution they were looking for, they don't need the automatic runner anymore.

Also the Giants and Red Sox have been on weirdly parallel tracks for a while, someone pointed out to me recently they are basically the same team.

The problem Top Rank has is UFC is on ESPN and if UFC is delivering subscribers to ESPN + the execs will ask will expect boxing to do the same.

I've posted before on how it was only a matter of time for Showtime broadcasting boxing in the current era that TV networks/broadcasters live.

There are plenty of reasons already covered before, but one thing I'll always blame on the networks is not pushing back on mismatches or rather one sided fights.

Promotions exist to make as much money as possible and boxers want to make as much money as possible. I'm fine with this, but somewhere along the way networks thinking in only short term gains, made concessions to promotions and boxers that weren't in their long term best interests. So, I will miss Showtime as I miss HBO boxing, but in the end, they failed to make their boxing must see TV for one reason or another.

Ill also throw the blame onto the boxing commissions who continue to allow these mismatches and not try to enforce a standardized ranking system in boxing.

The only sports ESPN wants to cover are basketball, football and golf. They talk more about them in their off seasons than they do sports actually being played.

It's absurd that the broadcasters are the ones that put up the money but allowed themselves so little say on what fights actually happen.

This day was obviously coming for quite awhile.

Bad sign for boxing that Showtime didnt even stay in the business after their chief rival had left.

Hope Im wrong, Ive always been a stout defender of the state of boxing and actually made a thread of all the times people have said boxing is dying in the last 100 years to troll the sentiment, but really, boxing is in a state of emergency at the moment, imo.

My only real hope is that Dana White finally starts Zuffa Boxing (with hopefully a better name) and runs it simarlarly to the UFC and with the same machine behind it.

Kinda think thats boxings last real hope to stay mainstream.

    But again, hopefully Im wrong.
