who do you think was more of a freak of nature in their prime, Sonny Liston or Mike Tyson?

If Liston had from the age of 13 under Cas d'Amato the kind of lifestyle that Tyson has, we would have got the ATG No.1 HW boxer as a result.
P.S. with timely fights (at the age of 20) with the world champion.

there is nothing genetically freaky about Fury, in that he is a giant of a man, there are lots of them in recent decades... his supposed "he does great things that 'no other' bigman can do, is the biggest crock of kaka I have ever heard... the NBA is full of Giant athletic men. just another BIG Man, who is a 2cd, 3rd fighter in a generally Subpar Division.

Is Liston a freak? Why? I'd say he's power and technique, basically. Mike Tyson was absurdly gifted.

Ummmmmmmmmmm no one is talking about Fury. Fury ain't "Tyson", only Iron Mike is "Tyson"..........Fury is Fury.

    Original question:
Tyson is possibly one of the greatest genetic freaks of nature in boxing history. He shouldn't even be a HW, he has the frame of a SMW/LHW. Fully clothed in person he doesn't even look like a HW. Him vs his opponents he looked 2-3 weight classes smaller. He should not have the power, durability, or physical strength to even compete at HW and yet he conquered the division and ruled it for 4 years straight.

And then add his skill set on top of that and his hand/foot speed which was more comparable to 2 divisions lower than his weight class contemporaries.

Of course thistle knows this very well. He just couldn't resist the opportunity to belittle today's heavyweights in general - and Fury in particular!

Sorry north paw, I thought it was a reference to Fury 'the Giant' as though his size was a feakish element, were as today it is very common place.

No dig at today's HWs, just the new division and not even a dig, just an observation of a such hard to watch division.

How is this a question? Sonny was born with power, but he wasn't a sculpted slab of granite Greek god in his adolescence before having ever set foot in a gym like Mike.

And even that power of Liston's was more a thumping variety. Tyson had that fast-twitch explosiveness that made him more like a video game cheat code on legs.

    Very bizarre to compare, really.

Tyson. Destroyed the division barely out highschool against grown men larger than himself. Blazing speed of hand and foot. Tyson clearly

I understand your arguments for Tyson. But Liston's build with his enormous fist size and reach was even freakier to me.

His Build wasnt that unique compared to Tysons physical gifts. Listons build reminds me of Rahman. Long arms, big fists, medium height, big power and physical strength. Once the skilled SHW became more common, his talents dont stick out as much anymore. But ive never seen aomwone like Tyson. The only guys that compare in terms of the combination of speed and power are Pacquiao and RJJ, maybe Terry Norris but those are different styles.

Never heard Iron Mike described that way but it's apt.

Both, but if I had to pick I'd say Liston.

Most of what Liston did was down to power, science, and intuition.

However he still had one hell of a starter pack.
