I am currently having a heated debate elsewhere with a former member here who is now thankfully permanently banned. He states that Fernandez knocked Monzon down,as Fernandez was a big puncher he may well have done.My problem with his statement is he says they fought in January1966 for the South American Middleweight Title. Box Rec,and CBZ have no record of this fight occurring, and have them only meeting in September 66 for the Argentinian Middleweight title and on May 67 for the South American Middleweight title with Monzon winning by U Dec on both occasions.
This poster excuses the fact that there is no record of this January fight happening by saying he read it in an Argentinian newspaper.I believe Richard Murietta made a post saying Fernandez knocked Monzon down, but that it was in their September 66 fight.I've PM'd him and hope he responds. Can anyone else add anything to this?

I don't believe so, but it seems a strange thing to make up, although I heard he gave him two really good fights and each was a very close decision. He was a much smaller guy wasn't he, gave it to Monzon to the body all night, losing two close 'uns.

    @Richard M Murrieta

I don’t know the answer but I’m interested in this little mystery.

Does Red Cobra still post? He knew his Monzon back in the day and there was another guy who was absolutely s*it hot on him....can't recall his moniker though.

Fernandez was shorter but heavier ,weights for both fights.
    Monzon 157 3/4lb.
    Fernandez 159 1/2lbs.

What I think has happened is the fella misread Fernandez' record, his next fight was in January of 1967,I think he got confused between the two.which would have been just a mistake but he couldn't bring himself to admit to it, so he made up a catalogue of lies saying he read it in a Spanish speaking Argentinian newspaper. This guy can't even read English properly! I've asked him to provide the link to it and he came back with the classic duck answer,"do your own research",
Which of course I have, there is no record of a January fight between them, neither on Box Rec or CBZ.

My understanding, based on only a passing knowledge of the fight (that which took place on the 3rd of September 1966, according to Boxrec), is that Monzon was heavily criticized for his style and had not proven himself a champion against Fernandez, despite taking the Decision.

Essentially, the main gripe was that old chestnut of him not having been aggressive enough, while Fernandez was actively pursuing Monzon and the only one making the fight.

Monzon, meanwhile was using his physical advantages and footwork to control the distance, keep Fernandez at bay and counter him continuously to notch up the tally.

Notably, however - and I am prepared to be corrected by anyone with a more thorough knowledge of the bout - I believe it was Monzon who put Fernandez down in the 4th Round. But I would be glad if there is anyone who can confirm this.

True, but I need to correct myself, Carlos Monzon did fight Jorge Fernandez twice, both bouts were for the South American and Argentine Middleweight title, the first meeting was on Sept 3 1966, Monzon suffered a knockdown but got up to win a unanimous 12 round decision to win the title. The second meeting was on June 10 1967 following Monzon's 10 round draw against American Import Bennie Briscoe in May 1967, Monzon again defeated Fernandez to retain his title by unanimous 12 round decision.

I am the hot one just like some of you are hot after Hagler. I followed Monzon ever since he won the title from Nino Benvenuti on Nov 7 1970 by KO 12. I even ran into Carlos Monzon at the fight between Sugar Ray Leonard vs Daniel Gonzalez on March 24 1979, I was exiting the restroom to go buy a beer at the concession stand. Carlos was walking towards me, we both acknowledged each other with a nodding up of our heads.

"Monzon hadn't been off his feet since Jorge Fernandez floored him in 1966.
Leaping up, Monzon raised both arms and took a standing eight count."

Some Yo Ho once posted to me that Feipe Cambiero said Hi in reference to his bout with Carlos Monzon. King Carlos lost only 3 fights in his whole career, he lost to Felipe Cambiero, Antonio Augilar, and Alberto Massi, all three were losses on points in 1964. Monzon defeated all three victors against Monzon in rematches, went on a 82 bout unbeaten streak dating back to Oct 9 1964 until his retirement as champion in August 1977 after 14 successful title defenses. Monzon's record was 89-3-9, 61 KO's. Carlos Monzon ducked no one in his division.

Incredibly, @Richard M Murrieta had a similar encounter with John L Sullivan at the Corbett-Jackson bout.
