GGG stepping aside by the looks, just in time for Zhanibek Alimkhanuly to step up - he's got Vincenzo Gualtieri in a unification fight this weekend and if he wins it that'd make him the new divisional number one I guess. It's true that GGG will probably have a retirement do, but even if he does, he'll then be retired and in the meantime he hasn't won a fight in 18 months.

Will his fellow Kazak Alimkhanuly be your new number one at MW? It's true that Vincenzo was a little lucky against Esquiva Falcao but he's a weird, awkward fighter, and this is a weak MW division full of guys that aren't fighting each other.

It's great to see two of the major players take each other on and i'd make the winner the owner of the best win among active middles.

I didn't get to see the fight. Why was Gualtieri a little lucky against Falcao?

The scorecards were close enough that they could have gone either way depending on the site, and a knockdown was scored against him which should not have been.

I can't say it's worth it but you can get it at All The Best.

With GGG likely to retire soon it’s great to see that Janibek is there to fill that void. He’ll most likely become the top fighter at MW.

I'd like to see him fight Adames or Lara at some point. Maybe even Charlo if he can get it together, those are going to be his signature fights.

He wasn't lucky in the least, he dominated him. I think I had it 116-110. I could see it even wider. The match against Thomas Piccirillo on the other hand, he lucked out a bit. It doesn't matter though, Zhanibek will emulsify him.

For me, that kind of heavy victory would do it, put him in pole in an uncertain division, anyway.

Not that being #1 at middle is anything like being #1 at heavy, and transient top middles is something we've seen, but it's still a signficant spot on the fistic landscape. Given his age (30 or 31) he needs to get motoring, too, maybe stray belts will be a goal, maybe he'll look to iron out what competition he has.

Is middleweight competitive enough that the designation is worth defending? Or will he immediately try to make fights at 154 or 168?

Gualtieri is kind of like Patrick Teixeira, yeah he’s pretty crap but he won a world title legit as an unfancied underdog and is now going straight into a real defence, which is more than what many better fighters have done

He might've been unfancied, but I picked him to win without even a moment's hesitation. Because Falcao really really suuuuuuuuuucks.

I mean the champ makes the belt, not the other way around. Golovkin was in a pretty miserable 160lb division but he'll very much be remembered. If this guy does the business this weekend and then doesn't shift for five years, hell yes it will have been worth it.

I'm not sure how much more tempting 168lbs is tbh. I mean it's Canlelo or bust really.
