Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder: What is going on?

I remember back in 2016 when the fight should have happened silly Barry Hearn waffling on about "the time isn't right just now, let it marinate a while longer..."


7 years later...

Joshua is the new Derek Chisora and PPV Loot is all he cares about against very limited fighters.

Hearn will continue to mention Fury and Wilder but in the ring will be Dillian Whyte or worse.

 

The infuriating part is that Joshua would still earn more against Wilder than anyone not called Fury.

But Hearn makes it crystal clear that he'll only consider the top fights if they bring in much, much more money than the tick-overs that consistently line his pockets.

 

Joshua has built an entire brand image around ducking Wilder and Fury for a decade, it’s taken years of careful marketing, product placement and feasting on countless shot to pieces old name fighters and bums to get to the position he is. It’s been a labour of love by 258, their Magnus opus if you will. He isn’t about to change it now.

 

Saudi money controls elite HW boxing.
They show the money Fury/Usyk is signed.
They dont AJ/Wilder isnt.
Boxing is all business now and without money it s dead.

 

Joshua-Wilder has been not happening much longer than Saudi money been an issue.

 

True but before Saudi money I didnt think there was a real possibility of it happening.

AJ was completely spoiled by PPV loot in the absence of Fury and Wilder is completely delusional at the moment so unless another Arab nation puts up $40 million for each fighter I can’t see it happening (ever)…

Imagine a world where AJ vs Miller or Whyte2 is PPV in December

 

Oleksandr Usyk had selected Wilder to beat Joshua :

It's easily understandable, plenty people will pay for either. Not as many as AJ's heyday on Sky but in the earlier days 420,000 PPV sales against Whyte was a huge win. DAZN would take half of that now.

Would he though? He's making a fortune no matter who he fights and only has to throw the other fella a couple of hundred grand.

 

Beat me to it. Saudi money only became a thing since 2021, what is AJ's excuse for not facing Wilder prior to that?

The Wilder AJ fight should have happened back in 2018 or 2019. That was the moment for it.

If boxing had one governing body that called the shots, fights like that would get made when they need to be made.

 

Makes sense for both of them. They are both big names in the UK and it will sell tickets. Regardless of the fact that Whyte is a shell of his former self and AJ is now late stage career looking to suck every penny dry from the sport
