Meritocracy is not the basis for capitalism. Free markets and private enterprise are the basis for capitalism, and private enterprise isn't mutually exclusive from nepotism, authoritarianism, corruption or monarchy.

You can think they're icky, evil or not democracies (and to be clear they're definitely not democracies) but Russia, China, Saudi Arabia etc are all capitalist nations. State capitalism is still capitalism, not communism. You sound like you're conflating capitalism with democracy (and even then the basis for democracy isn't merit)

 

I don't regard that group of nations you cite as "icky". I think of them as inferior. But I wouldn't want you to get banned. It's obvious that you are a poor oppressed victim of meritless Western hegemony. So I won't argue that merit is fundamental to both capitalism and representative government. I will content myself with pointing out that the original point of contact was corruption and that Russia is more corrupt than the West in general and The United States Of America in particular. And yes, I've been there.
