Why do some boxers make fake sounding noises when they punch?

I've noticed some (and definitely a minority) of boxers make these strange 'HA!!!' noises when throwing a punch and in training while practising combinations they'll do it in quick succession with every punch.

It sounds fake to me as though it's a sound they've been told to make by their coaches.

A grunt seems more the type of sound someone would naturally make when exerting themselves.

Why do some boxers do it?

nah it's not fake. It's like a release. A form of breathing. Exerting a lot of energy etc.

Like the NFL players in the scrum or what ever it's called. They brace for contact, and when they hit each other and get hit, '' AHHHHHHHH ''

Same ****. Most people have to.

    Sounds pretty fake to me.

    A grunt...? - yes.

    A 'HA!!!'...? - no.

As mentioned above, it helps you to align your breathing with your strikes. Also if you exhale all the air it contracts your core making it easier to take shots yourself. A grunt wouldn't suffice.

The same thing is practiced in traditional martial arts. It can sound funny, and tbh the "choice" of sound can just be a personal affectation, or the culture of the gym/dojo or the wider martial art.

Exactly. It's called a "kiai". It's something every traditional martial artist learns when they start training. In practice, I never felt like it actually helped me enhance my power or sharpness while doing it in sparring. Actually, I felt like it wasted energy by disrupting my normal breathing. But other people clearly feel like they get some benefit from doing it.

Mayweather bag work. Speaks for itself.

    Francois Botha.

John Molina or Carlos Molina possibly John, same thing.

Very comon and everyone is different. Tim Tszyu when doing bag work or shadow '' SSSS SSSS '' Which is very normal and very common. Yet he doesn't do that in the actual fight. Tyson '' sssss sssssss'' as well. Heaps of boxers do this as well as different noises.

The fact that you don't know this, speaks volumes.

Personally, I would have gone with the ‘pssh pssh’ one Lennox Lewis style, but hey, ‘ha’ is good enough.

This ^ It's so that your abdominals are tense and so that if the other guy slips one downstairs you aren't breathing in. Sucks to take a gut shot if you aren't ready for it

Any boxer who grunts or makes a sound when they punch should not only never be allowed to box on a televised event they should have their licences revoked

Grunting when you punch does not help you generate more power it makes you look like a wuss

Some do it to annoy. Some don't. It's bs that every fighter would do it for that reason.

Seriously are you guys ****en fighters? Do you want to be a ****en fighter? Sorry couldn't resist. My Dana White was coming out. I just need to hit the buffet twice a day to be more '' Dana esk ''
