Jess was definitely got the S kicked out of him but the broken jaw, orbital, whatever version was repeated for decades seems a bit far fetched,

Did Jack have a killer instinct? Absolutely. It was essential to his hobo camp/bar room roots. But he was something of a four round fighter, as even his wife pointed out. That's the flipside to his take no prisoners style.

Sure, there’s good chance the degree of damage was exaggerated - but in the era of no mouth guards, Jess even denied the loss of any teeth - anyway, as you said, it was a vicious beat down any which way - and if Jess did escape any serious damage - then you might call him a bit lucky I guess.

True, Dempsey was naturally at his most dangerous in the early rounds but I think he retained a good measure of viability thereafter.

Not that I subscribe to the quote exactly but relevant to note that Jack Johnson said that for the first 4 rounds Dempsey was a sabre toothed tiger but for the rounds thereafter, he was just an ordinary fighter.

I don't have the film to support it, but I think that John L Sullivan and Terry McGovern, might possibly be in the argument.

I would actually vote Mercer as being one of the top guys for this. He didn't often go on the offense but when he did he was brutal such as when he put Morrison away. He's one of the few guys I've seen who had the firepower to make Holyfield back away when he went on the offense.

His wife is something of an expert, knows loads about boxing I’m sure.

Well, her complete statement was that Jack did cocaine before fights and that's why he was a 4 round fighter. I'm sure she knew more about Jack than some keyboard warriors a century later.

If I had to pick one, it's Robinson. He just looks damn nasty when he hits guys and I don't recall ever seeing him let a hurt opponent off the hook, even though he did carry Armstrong. SRR's viciousness was second to none.

Don't know if he's been mentioned but Shane Mosley was pretty savage, like RJJ said, if Shane hurts you, he's gonna be on you!

Would a Edwin Valero mention be in bad taste?

No. But he was not tested enough for a mention among these types of boxers.

So you agree with Maxine? (Was she the one who said it?) he was a 4 round fighter. I personally disagree as his boxing record indicates otherwise.

Sure, he was a frontrunner. But not many dudes could last that first 4 rounds. Hell, a lot didn't make it out of the first.

Calling him a 4 round fighter is different to calling him a front runner. But I agree with what you’re saying yeah - I don’t think anyone here I wager would disagree.

Jack Dempsey is my pick at #1 for killer instinct.
