My initial thoughts were they are pretty poor figures but apparently these are considered good numbers so shows what I know...
Given Sky get the champagne out when something on Sports hits a million, I'd say it's a decent enough number given most of the boxers on show were not exactly household names.
I wonder how it compared to the Queensberry show. I told my old man there was a decent night of boxing on & the plonker watched the Sky show by mistake
Saw Sky 450,000 also watched the woman’s football game on Sky at the weekend. Our sport really is niche isn’t it?
it's mostly niche, but just the exception is the few times a year all the casuals jump on board for a Fury fight or something.
True. It’s why there’s the persistent rumour of Sky pulling out of boxing and just having 3 or 4 PPV shows a year. I spoke to someone a few years back who’s involved in Sky Sports who I know through mutual friends (middle management I believe not claiming he was the CEO or high level) when Matchroom when to DAZN and asked why they were losing a market leader to a new entry. And he was quite honest; boxing doesn’t bring in the viewership or revenue to pay top dollar so they had no intention of increasing/matching any payment to Matchroom. I think the respect Adam Smith got through the management and the hierarchy at Sky led to a bit more funding than initially intended after Matchroom went but over the last 18 months with Smith taking a break/leaving we’ve seen the approach to boxing take a massive nose down. It’s only going to get worse in the next few years once Fury and Joshua retire as there’s no one left in British boxing to draw in the casuals. You could say Connor Benn but he’s 27, never fought anyone and a drugs cheat who fights on a small platform (in terms of UK market share) - you don’t become a star by fighting locked away from the public eye. All rests on the Premier League rights to see what happens next in the UK sport broadcasting landscape. Hard to predict what will happen but it’s clear that it’s going to be very aggressive.
Hate to be that guy, but are you related to Azim / do you know him personally? Azim looks like a great talent but Boxxer are moving him too quickly in terms of activity. His next fight is planned for February again at European level. They need to make sure they don’t rush him. I can see him taking an unexpected loss against an opponent he shouldn’t lose to next year or in 2025 because Boxxer need headliners. They should chill out a bit. Azim looks like one of the future British world champions but I wouldn’t say he’s a big star yet. There’s a reason why Tyler Denny headlined the card on the weekend not Azim regardless of the fact Denny shifted a load of tickets.
That doesn't make him a "big star" yet though. Not sure why you're so defensive when I only stated facts about Azim - I even said he'd be a future world champion. Why would I care how many numbers Smith and Eubank do? Do you know Azim personally because you seem very emotionally invested in his career.
Yeah on Channel 5. Anyway @Boris Wang your guy’s fight date will have to change when Eubank Jr vs Benn is announced! It would be great business if Dalton Smith fought Harlem Eubank on that undercard but it seems like Hearn wants Smith to headline in Sheffield and Harlem Eubank doesn’t seem keen to fight Smith.
