Demetrius Andrade On Benavidez: "When I Beat Him, He's Young Enough To Endure The Loss"

Demetrius Andrade might be the most patient man in the world. He certainly is in boxing circles.

As an amateur, Andrade was about as good as it gets. The list of names he knocked off in the unpaid ranks includes Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman, and Daniel Jacobs. Once he turned pro, much was expected of him.

Ultimately, Andrade has done a lot. He’s still an undefeated fighter 15 years later and a former two-division champ. But, at the age of 35, he was never able to take on a big name. Perpetual callouts in the direction of Canelo Alvarez, Jermall Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and Gennadiy Golovkin led to eye rolls and shrugged shoulders.

Although his hopes were fading, Andrade was thrown a lifeline of sorts when David Benavidez agreed to fight him. For the first time in his decade plus long career, oddsmakers believe he’s in over his head.

In the case of Benavidez, Andrade faces an opponent with an endless engine, a unique offensive skill set, and more importantly, someone significantly younger.

That youth is normally a plus. It’s the classic case of the young lion vs. the new one. The energy he brings to the table pushed him over the winning edge in a recent showdown against Caleb Plant, it also did the same against everyone else - along with his talent.

Admittedly, Andrade knows that Benavidez is a threat to his undefeated record and championship aspirations in a new weight class. But, with a showdown against Canelo Alvarez ostensibly on the table, the former Olympian is working his butt off behind the scenes.

There’s a narrative forming around their super middleweight showdown. As the older star on the showcase, many are of the belief that Benavidez is using Andrade to catapult his

Andrade has a different way of thinking. Youth might be on his opponent's side in the ring, but once Benavidez comes up short, his age will be a benefit but for another reason.

“When I beat him, he’s still young enough where he can endure the loss,” said Andrade on an episode of All Access. “It’s ok. You’re still young enough to where you can continue to beat everybody else.”

A former amateur world champion, 2 weight world champion, undefeated, at least knocks down pretty much everyone hes fought.

He has quite a bit backing it up.

Think Benevidez natural size and youth will be a big factor though

I'm gonna bet a fair bit on Andrade here, I really fancy him to win if he's fully prepared

On a somewhat related note, idk whats up with Benavidez but for whatever reason he's always got a negative attitude towards so many other fighters whether it be Canelo, Plant, Andrade, Charlo, etc. With most boxers this kind of stuff is just for promotional reasons, but Benavidez? Idk, its always personal with him and he's often quite angry. Seriously did Canelo sweep some dust in his ***** and aggravated it or something?

If Benavidez beats Andrade and gets to finally fight Canelo, I hope Canelo beats the **** out of him. I really do.

That preparation better include excising whatever it is in his psychology that prevents him from maintaining his intensity over 12 rounds. He can be supernatural one round and have you thinking he's going to end things the next...only for him to go quasi-catatonic for the next three.

Also, some of Andrade's successes have relied on him being a taller, range-ier, awkward opponent. That's not in play here. Benavidez is the bigger man.

Nah, he's just angry because he's hungry. That guy has to work to make 168 lbs.

He’s fought no one of note as a pro, so very little backing it up actually.

Should be a good match, a very good match to be honest. Benavidez will force this to be a powder keg.

Only Plant is a bigger fighter than who Andrade has fought.

Andarde has fought a list of guys who were top 10 fighters in his division.

Lets not act like Benavidez has a HOF resume

You don't seem to know the difference between David Benavidez and Jose, the older brother, who is always angry as opposed to David who was very friendly with Andrade and all his other opponents other than Plant, and has never been disrespectful to Canelo even though he should have been considering how Canelo is trying to screw up his career.

He hasn't been disrespectful to anyone that didn't ask for it (Plant). If he's a little ornery, I'm sure the weight cut has something to do with it.

Beat him? I just hope that Canelo grows the stones to fight him.

I wanted Canelo to face Andrade back then instead of fighting Liam for the vacant title & Benavidez instead of Callum once more, it would have sorted all this out a long ago & even now i believe Canelo is capable of victory over David.

This will be a good chance to find out i it was just diarrhea that produced that produced out of David that night against Plant.
