Do you think fighters, from the 90s onwards, are faster ?

No, I don't think so. On average, they are pretty much the same as they were in the 1970s and 1980s. I'm really not sure about before that.

Nope. In fact with the different weigh in rules I'd say that the old timers were faster because they were correspondingly smaller per division.

Some of the older fast fighters have been forgotten either due to lack of footage or not having had their time in the spotlight.

I mean, look at Monzon... then look at the middleweights from the 90s onwards... I have little doubt that Canelo, for instance, is faster with his hands than Monzon, or, I don´t know, Gene Fullmer or somebody, not Robinson, not Hagler (maybe ?)......

Tell me a guy that is faster than Zab Judah that isn't an ATG on his own...

I'd say some of it is footage, and some of it is training.

Fighters today are athletes first, boxers second - and it reflects in the sport - whereas fighters from prior to the nineties didn't really train in an athletic way. They focused on technique, ring experience, and took far less time between fights. Nowadays, there's a lot of weight placed on a structured training program. These programs are usually based on the skeletons of Olympic Weightlifting programs, which naturally improve your speed, power and general athleticism. But these takes time out of the ring, so it has it's own drawbacks.

But footage is a big one, as it's impossible to know if it's accurate or not. Especially prior to coloured TV.

I liked the trainning part, good post, it is a belief of mine that the addition of working mitts (pads) made things different in a lot of aspects too and this is one of those. I do believe that on average you get faster guys in modern boxing. And what you said about the olympic structure is spot on.

I don't agree with the footage aspect since you can see how fast Floyd Patterson or Robinson were, with no issue.

monzon wasn't known for speed in his own day tbf. i agree canelo has faster hands but not by a huge amount. foot speed would be in carlos' favour, canelo can really lumber around after a few rounds.

zab's a bad speed matchup for just about anyone.

margarito had a solid career, boy was he slow, if the average guy was so quick that could never have happened.

    My point is that.
You get Floyd Patterson and Robinson mentioned as fast guys from the past. I can mention 10 guys from the 90s that were fast, maybe just as much as them, see how there is a much bigger number of fast guys in modern boxing ?

What I mean is..... being fast back then (I should have said 80s onwards in the thread title tbh) seemed like to be the exception. In modern boxing it is the rule..

Margarito was the exception for his day. He would be just as fast as anyone in older eras...

And I meant quickness of hands mostly...
