Which fight do you think Tyson took the most punishment in? For me, it's Holyfield I. He probably took more clean shots against Douglas and Lewis, but he seemed completely out of it after the Holyfield fight. In fact, I vaguely recall in a post-fight interview Tyson saying that much of the fight was a blur to him. Holyfield seemed to really concuss him (with his fists and head).
He was referring to a headbutt that he claimed caused his foggy memory....IMO he was just excusing his loss.....Douglas beat the hell out of Tyson which shows how strong and tough he really was...it was the young 23 y.o. physical prime psychology sliding Tyson who listlessly took the beating
I thought it was Lewis. I actually thought the last two rounds bordered on torture porn. I never thought that during the Douglas fight, in fact I thought Mike might turn it around until the last round. The Lewis was practically never in question.
Douglas beat him from pillar to post for almost 10 complete rounds, despite referee Meyran being a complete fool. Holyfield's headbutts caused some of the damage and for a big chunk of that fight the action was slowed by Holyfield tying Tyson up. Lewis takes 3rd place. He landed heavier single shots, made Tyson bleed from both eyes but Mike looked like he might've gotten up but packed it in. Tyson just wasn't active enough for me, most of it was Lewis but Tyson was in **** shape by 2002. Douglas, then Holyfield and then Lewis in that order.
I dunno, could be an excuse by Mike. But those headbutts marked Tyson's forehead up fairly badly. I think those did more damage than people like to believe. Holyfield did tag him though, just not as much as Douglas did. Then again Tyson hadn't been hit since his return from prison so he probably wasn't acclimated to getting hit that often.
I think a lot of that had to do with Mike throwing less and less as the rounds wore on. Although Mike never bled from both eyes before and both eyes were severely swollen too.
In more current interviews/podcasts he still ruses the Douglas count, but he outright says "Holyfield was kicking my ass" He could take a beating, but he stopped answering fairly quickly in those situations, so while it took plenty of effort to put him away it was almost guaranteed when he was in that position Douglas definitely landed the cleanest hardest shots on him, but Holyfield chewed him up when they brawled toe to toe/inside
The Lewis one was torture to watch cos Tyson was really back end but Douglas for me really beat the crap out of him. That Tyson was near enough his prime, so for Buster to do that, very impressive.
Lewis bc it was the most hopeless. Holyfield 2 was more hopeless maybe but he just gave up before he could really take his medicine there. Douglas and Holyfield I were FOTY candidates in their time, and even if they weren't competitive the whole way through had that Tyson element lurking. Tyson vs. Lewis was a sham statement from a bitter, jealous Lewis and a desperate, broke Tyson. Tyson needed cash and Lewis needed to assert himself as "the guy" in the public's eye years after actually becoming the king. When Tyson even did his signature, pro wrestling style charge to excite the fans at the beginning of the first round, Lewis immediately turned the tables and almost knocked him out just then. Tyson at this point would just follow guys around, then jump into throwing a left hook or a right hand that would smack the guard ineffectually or knock out Clifford Etienne or Franz Botha depending on the night. By the beginning of round 4 I was feeling the context of a carrying. By round 6 it was simply punishment as Tyson stood there getting his face jabbed in. Lewis would jab his face, and when Tyson would reflexively paw his own nose to make sure it was still there, Lewis would just settle back into his pocket and hammer out another jab into Tyson's mouth or nose. The overhand right was magnetized to Tyson around the side of his head and the straights were going right through his guard. His head movement at this point was a show for the fans as a callback to his famous training footage pacing the ring with Teddy Atlas, slipping back and forth--just another heat point for the fans. Tyson was a pro wrestler by this point, doing his rope slipping routine just to emerge at the end of Lewis' punches. In form, still good Lewis just dominating and beating the crap out of Tyson every which way. I don't think Tyson ever got out of Lewis' pocket even an inch, and Manny Steward's theatrics were something that he practiced backstage I bet to make the DVD cut of the fight recap because Lewis didn't need any wake-up calls. This was somehow both a dud and a brutal beating.
Lewis because it was hopeless. Tyson was in the fight vs Douglas and Holy right until the end. Tyson was doing ok against Holyfield in round 10 until Holyfield set him up to step into his right hand. Against Douglas i actually though he hurt Buster a few times in round 9/10 but Tyson himself had so little left by that point that douglas who had taken far less punishment rounds 1-8 that he was able to get him out of there
