Bums. Those guys were small men. Lyle faced feared puncher Shavers, tough journeyman Scrap Iron Johnson, Buster Mathis, Joe Bugner, Jimmy Ellis, Oscar Bonavena, all these guys were way better than those nobodies you listed there. Terrell fought no real challenge himself before facing Williams so obviously he was not stopped once prior to the fight. But I can make an exception for him as he was a solid fighter.
Stopped reading when you said Scrap Iron Johnson, who never sniffed the top ten and was 22-27-5, was better than all of the above rated fighters I listed. He lost to multiple Williams victims that weren't even good enough to make my list. He lost to Herring ffs Stop being silly. Now that list with 3 rated fighters Lyle beat?
I still feel Lyle boxes the head off WIlliams, getting stunned mid way, in a entertaining back and forth with a Lyle late TKO. Young was a fantastic boxer who not outboxed Lyle x2, arguably beat Norton (outboxed Ali at one point), and even Ali (noted Ali was no where near prime but this has to count for something). So im not surprised Lyle was outboxed cleanly. For the Machen fight, i'd like to see that to see Cleves pure boxing skills.
Also, I don't see Ingo dismantling Young in a Tyson/ Spinks type of fashion. Even in a one off situation.
[/QUOTE] Well, the fight will likely come down to who can survive a punch out and I have more faith in Lyle's chin than Williams. To me, Lyle showed he had more durability vs big punchers than Williams did. Worst case scenario for Lyle is that Williams puts him on the deck, but he gets up. But once Lyle puts Williams on the deck, he stays on the deck.

I'd say whoever's jab can control the distance and set up bigger punches will win this fight.
I'm divided on it. Both were quite good. Both had fair stamina, and both good take a shot. I think Lyle could take more punishment, but Williams was the better boxer, and faster. So they both have a lot going for them. Obviously they're both strong as hell. I could see either man prevailing via knockout or decision.
True, he did perform well against Ali, but Lyle did not have as good of jab as Williams in my opinion. And I think Williams was faster. Lyle was probably more mobile than Williams but I also think Williams had better defense, at least when it came to blocking, a foreign concept to Ron Lyle. I still think Lyle was a decent boxer for such a big, strong guy though.
you say Williams beat nobodies but list Scrap Iron as one of Lyle’s best wins? Talk about having your cake and eating it to!
If Gerry Cooney could knock Lyle out, I think Cleveland can too. He was much faster than either Cooney or Lyle.
