Marvin Hagler vs Roberto Duran - how close did Hagler come to losing?

I had it 9-5-1 Hagler. Duran put on a really good performance and although he was competitive,there is no way that it was as close as on a couple of judges' cards. This is what happens at times when a fighter does a lot better than expected - some think that he did better than he actually did.

 

Scoring is subjective.I agree with the official cards, it really was that close.I thought Hagler had a lot of trouble landing cleanly on the slick and clever Duran.

for a good reason.

it was a boxing match not a war, hagler won by a couple points.

 

I thought it was competitive but not close, (there's a difference)

 

Although not a big puncher at the weight, Duran still carried respectable power at 160. Power wouldn't scare Hagler, but I guess Hagler was overly cautious of looking bad against the still crafty Duran.

 

I watched it for the first time five or six years ago and had Hagler winning a wide decision. There's some close rounds in the early going which could go either way but at most Duran came within three or four points of Hagler.

I was curious about the contemporary reaction to the decision and there was controversy over how closely the fight was scored in the boxing press. The Hagler camp may have officially complained.

 

They were pretty equal as far as the dog in them and ring IQ, Hagler won by turning it up a notch at the end, ultimately it was Hagler's better conditioning and maintained composure, Duran was getting a little sloppy and slugfest-ish, Hagler kept it tight and on course

 

It wasn’t that close and Hagler was never behind or hurt. The fight was more about Hagler under performing and his weakness of letting his opponent get into his head, a trait that would prove disastrous vs Leonard.

 

Close on paper but the action told a different story.

9 Hagler - (Clear round for Hagler - He's in cruise control)
10 Hagler - (Closer round - Hagler bullies Duran for much of it, but Duran shows he's still in it)
11 Duran - (Hagler gives this round away - Duran's pressing enough to edge it)
12 Duran - (Heavily in favor of Duran - probably his best round of the fight)
13 Duran - (Very close - Hagler re-establishes his form, but Duran edges this one)

Yeah I would agree with that. The better conditioning of Hagler made the difference. He outhustled Duran in a very close fight. I just think Duran did not do enough in the last round to justify a draw.

 

Have not watched it in years, but as I recall, Duran was in the fight, and even took the lead at some point, but then faded later and Hagler came on and won it. I'd have to watch and score it again.

It was another of Marvin's fights where, although he won, did not behave or fight like his usual self. Maybe because he was in with a legend, Duran's reputation had an effect on him.
