Larry Holmes vs Gerry Cooney Was Very Competitive

@JohnThomas1 this thread is for you since we were discussing this a few days, i also need to ask you something before my write up. The 9th round i thought Cooney won the round but he had two points deducted so is my score of 9-8 correct ?

So i just went back and scored this fight this is only my 2nd time watching this fight in full, and i have to say i really don't know what people are on about when they say "Cooney got dominated" "Cooney got exposed" this was a very competitive fight for 10 rounds until Cooney started to wear out in the later rounds.

Yes Larry Holmes had the bigger rounds in the fight where he actually floored Cooney and wobbled him, but Cooney himself was fighting very well between rounds 3-10. He was able to land fairly consistently to Holmes's body, land his own jab occasionally, and even got some right hands in which he wasn't known for although not with anywhere near the same power as his left hook.

If i was born during this era and was watching this fight live i really wouldn't know what was going to happen for 10 rounds this was anybody's fight. To me Cooney gave it everything he had in that 10th round probably worried that he fell behind because of point deductions, but at that point in the fight this is where Holmes separated himself from Cooney and showed why he was the best of his era because he always seemed to have that bit extra in tough fights.

Overall i was actually impressed with Cooney in this fight, and also impressed with how Holmes took those body shots without showing any wear and tear. On a unrelated note seeing how many body shots Holmes took can you imagine Usyk taking that type of punishment from Cooney ? because i don't.

 

Of course it was competitive. Larry had issues with Cooney's height. Cooney was a good fighter and a hard puncher

 

Holmes was a tad bit past his best.


At the end of the fight, the only real shocker was the announcement of the scoring. After twelve rounds, two of the three judges, Dave Moretti (who the Holmes camp tried to have replaced before the fight) and Duane Ford, had Holmes ahead by only two points, 113-111. Had the referee not deducted three points from the challenger, Ford and Moretti would have had Cooney ahead on points going into the thirteenth round. The third judge, Jerry Roth (who was substituted the day of the fight for Herb Santos due to objections from the Holmes camp), had Holmes ahead 115-109, a far more reasonable reflection of the events in the ring. "I've seen so much bad scoring out here I knew what I had to do," said Holmes. "I was prepared for anything."

i disagree. holmes boxed the **** out of that guy.

no disrespect to the obvious loser of that quality fight.

 

It was competitive in parts, it was a great fight to.
After so many rounds it was obvious who was gonna win but Cooney was still trying toward the end.
He faced one of the greatest heavyweight champ s in history that night.

 

Yeah Cooney got himself together and gave a good account of himself after getting knocked down but the judges who had that fight close were on the planet Twylo.

 

It was extremely competitive and a fun fight to watch.

 

Super long time ago I watched it and I don't remember my exact scores, but my take was pretty much like yours from memory.

I’ve always thought it was competitive. I realize Cooney was a tad overhyped in his day but I think the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. I’ve seen people pic obscurities to beat him fantasy fights

Larrys face was a sight to see when Arcel rubbed smelling salts or some other substance in his mug after round 11.

For his lack of fights against top tenners, Cooney did a lot better than I thought he would. Much better than his record suggests.

 

Round two proved Larry could've won anytime he wanted to, and he told Cosell the next day it honestly wasn't a hard fight for him. As he and Gerry have become such close friends in retirement, Larry's very generous to him.

Holmes carried him in hopes of an extraordinarily lucrative rematch, but Gerry knew how badly outmatched he was and that the Assassin was always in command of the outcome. That's why Gerry was out of action for so long afterwards.

Larry wasn't trying to finish things off in round 13, he was waiting to eliminate Cooney at the outset of round 15 after they touched gloves, but Gerry simply didn't have enough left to remain upright that long.

With half a minute to go in round two, Holmes did not go for the kill, but had already discovered that Cooney could take in on the chin, but that if you hit him on the temple, "He wobbles like a duck." From this point on, Larry can finish him whenever he desires, but already has discovered it's an extremely easy and lucrative payday, so he tries to set up for another easy and HUGE second payoff (which would again be huge for Gerry as well - as it was, he, like Buster Douglas against Holyfield, is already set for life).

 

He had a mind of steel then not trying to knock him out after repeated low blows. Was he really so greedy, he allowed Cooney to punch him in the nuts, just to have an opportunity for another easy payday?
