I've been reading a lot of history of the American West, first hand sources and modern rewritings, most the year. I'm ready for some more boxing reading. Need to get Adam's second Dempsey book first and foremost. Other than that, anything good come out this year?
What would you recommend as a good starting point book wise to read into the history of the American West?
When I say American West, I really mean the whole westward expansion, the Spanish Conquistadors, the French fur trappers, the Yankee land speculators onward. I am specifically leaving out books focusing on Amerindians as that is it's own suject. Some books I would recommend: The Indian World of George Washington, Calloway American Fur Trade of the Far West, Chittenden Journal of a Trapper, Russell My Confession: Recollections of a Rogue, Chamberlain (this was a big influence on Cormac McCarthy) Astoria, Stark Blood and Thunder, Sides A Land So Strange, Davis, Redendes The Company: Rise and Fall of Hudson's Bay Empire That should give you a good start. I am by no means an expert in the field. And you should also read concurrent stories from the native side. There is no one doing as good work as Pekka Hamalainen right now. His books on the Lakota and Comanches are amazing. But there is so much more to study than he covers.
I watched The Revenant and came to the conclusion that they had it a lot rougher in that place and time than we do.
That's a pretty recent book but based on the real experiences of a real dude, Hugh Glass, who is an absolute legend. Possibly the most bad ass man to ever live.
Seamus, I finally read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" this year. It was very tough from an emotional standpoint to read all the way through, but really worthwhile, I thought.
I actually did read the book and liked it. My favorite Western book is and probably always will be Lonesome Dove.
A couple books on Canzoneri came out this year. I have one but haven't read it yet. I'm also interested in the new Henry Armstrong book. Paul Spadafora has an autobiography out that's free on Kindle but I haven't read that either yet.

Was reading from a link in another thread about the genesis of the sanctioning bodies and the alphabet mess and it got me to wondering if there isn't some giant Modern History Of Boxing or something akin. Some massive tome that gets started in the early 1800s say and runs til about the 1980s or so. Something definitive (more or less)? The bigger the better as far as I'm concerned Would be grateful for suggestions. Here's that link I mentioned: https://everything-everywhere.com/boxings-alphabet-soup/ Credit to Ioakeim Tzortzakis for pointing me to it.
