So...is it fair to say we've overrated Wilders punching power?

Wilder has never been known as a well rounded boxer.

He throws big.

Didn't throw at all though against Parker.

Bizarre performance.

 

Watch Wilder against Ortiz 2. I remember him landing practically zero punches for 6 rounds straight before KOing Ortiz with one punch.

 

Yeah looks like near-zero aggression from Wilder until the KO.

Why doesn't Wilder jab? His lead hook isn't great.

Surely jabbing with his reach would solve a lot of things for him in the ring

Mate he was done, his face was absolutely destroyed, the stoppage was fine.

 

Wilder does have legitimate KO power but it'd be a surpise if it wasn't over-exaggerated by his padded record. Statistically he is the greatest puncher in the history of heavyweight boxing, it's only when one looks at his record and see's he had 31 fights against nobodies before he finally stepped up to fight a live opponent that you understand how deceiving that stat is at face value.

More like he had 40+ fights against nobodies.

The only live opponents on Wilder career is 38 years old Ortiz, 3x Fury and now Parker. Everyone else was C and D tier tractor drivers.

In 2014 he fought Malik Scott in his 31st fight. While it ended up being a very dissapointing showing from Scott - to such an extent that people accused him of taking a dive - Scott had only lost to Chisora previously and was a significant step up in quality compared to Wilder's other opponents in the previous six years of his pro-career. So I count Scott at the first time Wilder began to move beyond bum-fighting but Stiverne, two fights later, is probably the first real challenge he ever faced as a pro.

 

Malik Scott was never any good to begin with it. He may have lost only to Chisora, but who he have fought before that?
And Malik Scott not 100%, but more like 10000% took a dive. I have watched that punch literally on slow motion 10+ times, and it didn't connect with any part of Malik head. You can clearly see that there is no impact with Malik head.
The left hook connect, but Malik didn't go down by it, and it was not hard punch at all. You can also see Malik on the floor that he wasn't hurt, but decide to fake it, and it was a bad fake.
Stiverne was a fake Champion, and one of the worst one in the entire history.

 

Fury matchup threw Wilder completely off course, Fury was meant to be that big name to legitimise Wilder but the cherry pick backfired as he couldn't get past Fury even after 3 years out the game drinking it up and snorting some white stuff. TBH apart from Ortiz his resume is basically tomato cans getting KO'd early, even then you need to take into consideration Ortiz was 43 when he fought Wilder.
