Now it looks like Wilder is coming to the end of his career with such a one-sided loss to Parker, maybe we can establish what his signature/best performance actually was? Stiverne 1 - Whilst he didn't stop Stiverne, he actually showed some nascent boxing skills as he claimed the WBC title with a wide UD! Ortiz 1 - Wilder showed grit and determination, and his KO power was on full display. This was Ortiz's time, but the referee and doctor had other ideas, which will always leave a dark cloud over possibly Wilder's best performance. Fury 1 - Showed great determination to not give up on his Sunday punch which he finally connected in round 12. However, he was, in the eyes of many gifted a draw, against the shell of Tyson Fury. Breazeale - Wilder poleaxed him in a round, with a highlight reel stoppage that put the pressure firmly on Anthony 'Coming to America' Joshua. Unfortunately, anyone that was following the division knows it should have been Whyte sharing the ring with Wilder that night, not Breazeale. So the quality of opponent needs to be considered. Ortiz 2 - Wilder gets completely outboxed round after round by Luis "Just for Men" Ortiz, but floors Ortiz with his first real punch as Ortiz gets greedy. Personally, I thought the referee should have let Ortiz continue, but there is no denying the power! However, it needs noting that the ever-green Ortiz also has been dropped twice by Charles Martin and three times by Andy Ruiz. Fury 3 - Wilder showed amazing heart as he went out on his shield. But this wasn't the Fury from fight 2. This was a fight that lacked quality but was full of blood, guts, and thunder. Helenius - another 1st round KO against his former sparring partner, who inexplicably charged face first into a short right hand. Some even claim it was another Scuba Scott special (if you know, you know). Hmm...pretty grim reading for a 10-defence champion and future HOFer... So, what say you? Maybe there is another fight you think was his best performance?
I'd say it was Fury 3. think he will retire. don't know if very much is left in Fury. time will tell. Maybe he should sail off into the sunset also.
To me, it'll always be Ortiz 2. Even though i thought Ortiz put a horrible showing (and was knocked down) against Hammer, that night he showed he was by far Wilder's best opponent. It was also a beautiful shot, Marciano-Walcott, Foreman-Moorer vibes
Ortiz 1 was his best win, but not without controversy. Stiverne 1 is the fight that defined his career - the one that got him the belt that made his name... It's also the best uncontroversial win he has.
He certainly has them, but that wasn't quite the question. What do you think his best/signature performance is?
Ortiz 1 Pretty sure Wilder must have been underdog going into that fight. Ortiz was the goods. A little old yes but still had life in him at that point and was ducked like the plague.
He certainly has them, and the point is others don’t. Not like him. He had his opponents spastic on the floor, or carried out on a stretcher, wives crying ringside because they think they are widows. Just going by stats doesn’t do his career justice. If I have to pick one I will say Stiverne 1 because he showed boxing ability. What was more defining was his trilogy with Fury as a whole. That was war. Who else has a 3 fight war and that many highlight reel knockouts on their name?
I would say picking his ass up off the deck and digging deep against Nichols. Gotta give Mr Yulaverse his props there.
Yep he dug deep in that fight and I think he was good enough to do the Ali shuffle during the bout. To be able to showboat against an opponent the calibre of Nichols is impressive.
Absolutely. They didn’t call him ‘Nuclear Nichols’ for nothing! Elite boxing specimen who rumor has it STILL holds the punching machine record at Terrible Tuckers Tavern.
I chose "other" for him digging down deep versus Nichols. It is definitely his most talked about fight ever and heavily posted all over the net.. The Sconiers one if we could ever find it would be a gem I'm sure
