His resume is very impressive. I've seen some bs in my time but to say Tank is overrated and has fought no one wreaks of idiocy. Too many clowns let their hate or their bias get in the way. Tank Davis is one of the best boxers on the planet easily. An absolute machine.
Actually, he is overrated mostly by him and his people. Most fans recognize that he has elite power. Most fans also know that he beaten a lot of good fighters but has yet to fight a great one. For the most part Davis is the money man and like Mayweather, Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Tyson and others he can choose his opponents and most will take the fight because it is the best available paycheck. Unfortunately, Davis seems to be protected by his management and they continually choose to fight lesser lights.
Hector Garcia, Rolando Romero, struggled with Isaac Cruz, Mario Barrios, Leo Santa Cruz, Ricardo Nunez, Hugo Ruiz, Jesus Ceullar, Isaac Cruz, Ryan Garcia, old Gamboa Question for OP: are YOU are able to name 3-5 fighters who were worth mentioning that the guys on this list defeated? Oh you can't? It's best you take Davis privates out of your mouth and understanding you don't have the evidence that Davis resume is good. Considering a tiny amount of lightweights stay near their best after their early 30’s, it's safe to say Davis has wasted his career fighting D/C level opponents with no championships or recognizable accolades. Davis will wait till 2026 to fight Loma and 2035 to fight Haney. No disrespect to these fighters also, being a pro in boxing is extremely difficult and boxing is the hardest sport in the world. However, Davis has continously fought Mexicans with no belts and Mexicans who didn't have any accolades in terms of who they defeated. There's rumors that Davis may fight Jose Valenzuela next and Jose fits the criteria of what Davis only wants to fight. A Mexican without a belt and any noteworthy wins over top comp. Chris Colbert isn't a top contender. This goes for Ryan Garcia as well who never defeated anyone noteworthy and never held a belt. The worst thing about Davis is his scared excuses. I am not a Teofimo Lopez fan but when Teofimo tried to make the fight with Davis, Leonard Ellorbe said Lopez doesn't draw or sell fights. So with that logic, Lopez doesn't sell fights but Hector Garcia does? It's a weak way of ducking. Davis is a great talent but he's a scared insecure little guy and he will be humbled when he faces a legimate champion at 140. For someone with such "devasting" power I never seen a guy so scared to move up in weight and fight someone who isn't a D level fighter like Barrios. Davis has ducked Lomachenko since 2015, 8 years and counting. Loma is old now but Loma is 100x better than Hector Garcia, Ryan Garcia, Hugo Ruiz and Isaac Cruz. You have no argument to why he isn't.
Precisely this. And to add - he's got the name recognition to make the better fights happen, but they never do... At this point, you have to ask yourself why not? Also... We've just seen what happened with Wilder when he stepped in with only his second legit contender (after Fury)... A timely reminder that guys who get ranked among the elite without having proved they belong there will always be ripe for an "upset" when they do fight someone decent. Now okay, Tanks resume isn't quite as bad as Wilders... But Wilder wasn't getting onto anyone's top 10 P4P lists either. Tanks definitely overrated.
He’s vastly overrated by the fanboys who think he beats every lightweight ever. It’s very similar to the Mike Tyson effect - look devastating knocking out solid but unspectacular opposition and suddenly you have amassed a group of deluded fans who think you are the greatest ever. Tank’s resume is solid but it’s not p4p worthy’s. Plus he’s shown 0 ambition to step it up a level, instead him and his team seem content to stay inactive and fight guys with little to no hope of victory. I have little interest in his fights and haven’t done so in years, too many Mickey Mousse belts and cherry picks. I’d much rather follow guys like Haney, Lopez, Crawford, Spence, and Inoue who are at least challenging themselves against the best fighters in their respective division(s).
As one of Tank's only fans on this forum lemme preface this by saying that his resume is not a great resume, it's not future HOF, it's not p4p or it's only at the lowest level of p4p (10-.15). He's never fought a top 3 fighter anywhere he's campaigned at. I don't even think top 5. Is he overrated? In those terms yes, but is his talent/potential overrated? No. Well beyond fanatics or detractors, Tank's main support comes from his own peers (other boxers, including some of the p4p elite that people rank ahead of him). So I'd say the answer is twofold. He passes the eye test, his actual resume just hasn't caught up yet. I do think that some of his main critics should reflect on the fact that fighters that they gush over actually like Tank and some of his overzealous fans should kinda temper their excitement until he proves more.
His main critics would be massive fans of Tank if he would just fight quality opposition. Teofimo and Haney have surpassed him despite being several years younger and Shakur is on his way to gapping him as well. Tank seems content wasting his career away. I can't think of any other boxer in history that won a world title at 24 and then made it to 30 undefeated while not facing another single world champion.
I think his pre Ryan Garcia opposition has been perfectly acceptable and a bit underrated. Pedraza, a once beaten and still capable LSC, Barrios, Isaac Cruz, Hector Garcia form a decent foundation of wins to build upon. Problem is, Ryan Garcia is considered to be his signature win in the minds of many; and that's a win that I personally consider to be overrated given how little I currently rate Kingry. So, he still needs a signature win to establish himself as truly elite. As it currently stands, he either just cracks my p4p Top 10 or hovers just below depending on my mood at the time.
I can appreciate that because it's true. As a fan, I readily admit he needs to do more against more elite.
He has never fought the best in a division. He'd probably try to demand a side money to face an actual champion. He's been managed excellently but as fans we only want to see the best fight each other.
His resume is devoid of any elite level fighters despite his popularity and KO ratio. He has not fought any of the best of his division. The fact that he has yet to face anyone at the level of Loma, Teo, Haney, or even Shakur at this age is mind boggling. He's a protected fighter through and through.
