    Shavers with one punch.
    Effective punching, Tyson,
    by far.....
Many heavies hit harder than Tyson
with one punch, But only one more
    effective than he was.
    That's Joe Louis.
    Meaning everyone Shavers ko'ed
    Tyson probably ko's.
    Everyone Tyson ko'ed I dont't
    believe Shavers would.....

Larry Holmes would say Shavers. Larrry Holmes is also a victim of a brutal stoppage at the hands of Tyson.

Other than a 7-3 version of Jimmy Young and Bugner on a cut, I can't name anyone noteworthy who Shavers was the first or only guy to stop.

Off the top of my head, Tyson was the first guy to stop Biggs, Thomas, Williams, Ruddock other than the asthma attack, Spinks, Stewart, Tubbs, Holmes, Mathis Jr. and Botha. And he stopped Seldon, Bruno, Frazier (maybe), Stewart, Etienne, Tillman, and Savarese faster than anyone else (not fact checking). He also was the only guy to stop Holmes and Spinks. And he concussed Golota, broke bones in his face, and herniated a disk in his neck.

There's a difference between consensus opinions and things that are actually based on evidence, such as my thread on Mayweather and Pacquiao's resume compared to Duran's, viewable here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-mayweather-and-manny-pacquiao.683550/page-50

The consensus opinion is that it is spelt like that.

    Earnie hit harder.

Tyson hit better, and was the better fighter by a significant margin.

Alot of boxers do that but in fairness to Holmes he did say Tyson was the sharpest puncher he ever fought.

For raw power Shavers may edge Tyson but Tyson with his combination punching, KO power in either hand, along with his blazing handspeed, is a much more effective KO artist than Shavers at higher levels regardless if Shavers had edge in power or not.

But when Larry fought Shavers, he was active and on top of his game. He took the shot and survived it so he remembered how hard it was. Against Tyson he was older, inactive and on the downside of his career. Everything probably hurt then but, when he fought Shavers and Larry didn't believe that he could lose, it probably took something to impress him. If you have ever taken a fall at 55 and been sore for 3 days- over a fall that you wouldn't have even experienced at 25- that should make sense.
As to who hit harder...I would rather fight Shavers because I would have a better chance of not getting hit than I would against Tyson, if I were Larry Holmes doing the reasoning.

It’s not that complicated. Larry formed his opinion because Tyson hurt Larry’s pride more than he physically hurt him.

Larry continued on and didn’t get badly hurt by McCall and Mercer, neither of whom is a stranger to putting someone’s lights out.

That's true that he went on and wasn't hurt by Mercer or McCall but that says more about those 2 fighters than it does about Larry, Tyson or Shavers. Mercer and McCall weren't all that good and certainly neither was known to be a huge puncher.
And if Larry formed his opinion because Mike hurt his pride more than he hurt him physically, wouldn't that kind of say that Shavers hit him harder?
I don't see how you can misunderstand fighters so much that you overlook the timing of events.

    Absolutely correct.

Shot Tyson stopped 230 pound Botha with a right that travelled maybe 6-8 inches and Botha was not chinny , if that is not raw pure power I dont know what is, to the best of my recollection Earnie never produced anything similar.

That’s not at all what I meant about Larry’s pride being hurt v physically hurt. Tyson pretty obviously did more physical damage than Shavers.

Mercer put Morrison to sleep and McCall Ko’d Lewis, Seldon and Maskaev and had Akinwande out cold. Those two were big hitters who were at least of similar quality to Shavers overall.
