Fights that ended early but you would have wanted to see a rematch/rubber match

Every now and then you have match ups or rematches that looked like it could have heated up to be something interesting but the fight itself ended surprisingly quickly (either by knockout, clash of heads, DQ, premature stoppage) and they never followed up with it.

Are there any fights that was stopped within the first 4 rounds that you would have been interested in seeing a rematch or rubber match?

I personally would have liked to have seen a rematch between Mike McCallum and Julian Jackson. First fight looked like it could have gone a bit longer. A rematch at MW when Jackson was champion would have been interesting.

Hagler-Hearns 2, mainly to see if Hearns could change up his tactics.

I would have liked to have seen Miguel Lora vs Gaby Canizales 2. The first fight was short but thrilling, especially the second round.

Technically this one doesn't qualify for the thread because it ended in round five but Mickey Ward vs Jesse James Leija for me. That was a fight I was salivating for and it was just starting to really heat up when it was stopped because of a headbutt. Leija ended up winning via TD and a title shot against Tszyu while Mickey ended up having to wait a bit for his big paydays which came with the incredible trilogy with Gatti.

I would have loved a rematch between Ward and Leija but it just wasn't meant to be.

How about Hearns vs Duran 2?

Not me, I think it goes the same.

However, it seems that there is a contingent of fans who think the planets aligned for Tommy and that on another occasion, Duran could’ve conceivably done that much better.

Though I disagree, all respect for their opinion - anybody here think that Roberto would’ve done a lot better? Just curious.

Charles Brewer vs. Antwun Echols. Not the most satisfying stoppage in this one. The two styles would make for an exciting, toss-up type fight every time though.

Carl Williams probably could have done much better in a rematch with Mike Weaver.

In that case, Carl should have fought Tyson again.

Very good call here. I remember in the post fight interview, Wlad said something along the lines of, "Believe me, I will get the rematch. I have the right on that". Not sure he really wanted that.

Would have liked to see what adjustments he would have made to avoid Sanders' left hand, because he had no clue how to in that fight...

I honestly think it would have ended about the same. The Steward trained Wlad could have won imo, but Sanders was ancient by then regardless.

Quite possible that an immediate rematch may have produced a similar result. Pretty sure Team Wlad wasn't too eager to put him back in there with a tall, fast-handed Southpaw with power who dispatched their man with relative ease. Sanders just seemed all wrong for Wlad. Still would have been interested in seeing a rematch...

I dont think things magically aligned for Tommy but it is well known Duran barely trained for that fight and basically just did enough to make weight. He took the fight way too lightly and paid the price. I give Duran a very good chance against Tommy had they met in 1980 at welter or even after had he showed up to fight like he did against Hagler or Barkley. Some people think it wouldnt matter but we never got a rematch so Ive never been convinced.
