Who allowed this farce to happen?

A 40 year old policeman we never heard of, getting a shot at the title against a still in his prime Roy Jones.
    HBO allowed that ridiculous nonsense.

This and Mayweather fighting the MMA guy have to stand out as two of the most ridiculous matchups in boxing history.

He was actually a good Amateur and won 2 New York golden Gloves Championships and had a record of 125-4.

But yeah i agree he didn't deserve a shot a RJJ but atleast he was a professional boxer with good Amateur pedigree. Tyson Fury being the current Heavyweight champion and having a controversial decision vs an MMA fighter is far worse.

That's Richard Frazier you're talking about, and yes, that was a serious mismatch. The only notable wins on Frazier's record was a UD and a KO in his two fights against an over-the-hill Anthony Hembrick. As far as whose idea it was to make that fight, good question. When it comes to title fight mismatches, that one might just be top 10 or 15 all time.

Another notable title fight mismatch: Reggie Johnson vs. Ki Yun Song. Check out Song's resume entering that fight...

It was a horrible fight. But it was a mandatory.

I think it was a WBC mandatory.

HBO didn't want to air the fight, but they had to as part of Roy's contract.

RJJ had a few questionable fights ... Yarbrough, Edens, Amundsen and Waddles to name a few forgotten souls.
To be honest RJJ was known for criminal mismatches. Talk about padding a record.

I recall reading in one of the boxing magazines back in 1991, some promoter down south who

I remember he had some kind of dispute with a boxing promoter down south. This was back in 1991 or so. They wanted Roy to fight different guys and they said Roy and his dad were turning down every opponent offered to them for one excuse or another. To be fair, he did beat top guys later on like Toney and Hopkins, so he was the real deal I believe.

    What are you talking about?

He was a 20 year old novice then, who’d just turned pro.

Roy never turned down any fights.

It was Roy Snr who wouldn’t let him off the leash.

Back then, Roy was handled by the Levin brothers, Stan and Fred. And Fred is on record stating that he hid title fight opportunities from Roy. It’s one of the reasons why Roy broke away from him.

Roy didn’t have an issue with who he fought.

    He wanted title fights.

He was sparring Ray Leonard, Reggie Johnson and Lindel Holmes when he was young.

If he was a "novice" as you say then what does that say about the tomato cans that were being put in front of him at the time. Lol

    What are you talking about?

I’m merely explaining to you why he fought low level opposition at that point.
