Canelo's run for unifying titles in the SMW now doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as was advertised.

Smith and Plant were exposed as average operators. Both have/had extremely thin resumes in winning columns and both failed badly at the elite level. Yildirim was demolished by CEJ and got a gift decision against 50 y.o. journeyman Lolenga Mock. Lost against some Turkish journeyman recently.

Saunders definitely was the most proven of the four guys that Canelo has beaten in that run, but even his resume is far from being great/impressive.

I think Joe Calzaghe, while being often criticized for his level of opposition, actually beat a lot of fighters who were better than anybody in that Canelo's run even before facing Kessler/Hopkins/Jones.

Eubank was definitely far better than Saunders and guys like Reid, Brewer, Woodhall, Mitchell were far better than Smith or Plant. Hell, Sakio Bika and Jeff Lacy were CLEARLY better than these two

Smith lost to the top guy at 168 and then moved UP and lost to the top guy at 175.

Cinnabunz knocked out Plant. David went 12 with him.

Canelo isn't comparable to Calzaghe as a SMW. There's not much substance behind Canelos short run at 168.. who's Plant, Charlo , Ryder or Saunders really beat? Best wins between em are probably a shot Groves & maybe a 40 year old Direll, who was B- level at best.. although Calzaghes opposition isn't the greatest either he still whooped Kessler, Eubank, Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, etc... those guys were legit SMWs with solid careers.. they weren't inactive MWs & a handful of Smith brothers

it’s a pretty good British title run to be fair. they should give him an honorary Lonsdale belt.

Canelo is largely a creation of bad refs, judges, and media anyway, with some PEDs mixed in.

Alvarez’s management clearly surveyed the available alphabet holders at the time and acted accordingly.
    All about timing.
Doubtful that move would have been made today, considering the two David’s would be in the mix!

Yeah as time goes on his resume and ability really diminishes.

Should be 1-1-1 or even 1-2 versus GGG, arguably lost to Lara, dominated by Floyd and Bivol.

In fairness, Canelo does have wins over: Cotto, BJS, Callum Smith, Plant, Daniel Jacobs, Mosley, and Kovalev. It must be noted though that Cotto was over the hill, as were Mosley and Kovalev.

Canelo definitely deserves HOF but he's far from Mexican GOAT. In saying all that...Canelo does have a path to supremacy.

If Canelo beats Benavidez then moves up and beats winner of Beterbiev/Bivol...holy smokes that's big. He could also look to fight a fringe CW champ and outbox them for a paper belt at end of his career.

That would be pretty damn impressive...if, and its a big if/ask, he's able to do that.

This year though I think, sadly, its Jermall then Benavidez. Sets up that 175 run again nicely though

Beterbiev was too strong for Smith, he has more size and muscle than Canelo which is why he made Smith look so bad, Beterbiev is not more skilled than Canelo, he just hits harder, he just a bigger version of Canelo.

Beterbiev would walk through Canelo, he`s far more aggressive than Kavalev and hits far harder than Canelo.
