Joyce just lost two on the bounce and quite badly Rebuilding is required and whilst on paper this is a terrible mismatch, it's probably what Joe needs
Too many fighters go right down to the bottom of the barrel after a defeat - Joshua and Wilder recent examples with their 'comeback fights'. Joyce is far too old to be wasting time and all he is doing is aging himself out of any potential big fights. At least get in with a Whyte or Chisora and if he cannot beat either of these stiffs then simply retire.
I feel sorry for Joe. Frank never seems to have his back. Every man and his dog are coining it in over in Saudi and poor Joe is left behind fighting at a leisure centre. All the time watching Dubois and Parker fill their boots after he beat them both
Sums up what is wrong with boxing. Joyce is the same level or better than some of the real grubs achieving nothing like Whyte or Chisora yet the PPV Loot flows their way.
It is a case of timing and reality of his current situation. His Team wanted Zhang brought over, and Warren/BT backed it on standard TV. If he had won, he would be about to make a fortune against Fury/Usyk..he didn’t and that’s boxing. Joe is obviously coming off being beaten up and sparked out twice in a row, so that’s the timing situation. Maybe if everybody had a Crystal ball, they wouldn’t have done that fight and simply waited around at a lower level with the interim until Turki came in with the oil money. In terms of the reality, Joe needs a warm up and a fight to get some of his confidence back. Assuming he wins easily expected, he is almost certain to be out in a big fight in the summer.
Yet will learn absolutely nothing or prepare him for the tests at the level he should be competing. Simply wasting valuable time at 38 years of age.
Unless you seriously expected them to put him in with another 6’5 big punching, southpaw the idea of learning anything at this stage is ridiculous. As you said, he is 38 yrs old & realistically should be packing it in within the next 2-3 fights tops. Joe is what he is- They just need to give him this confidence booster, then throw him back in. There’s a rematch with Dubois, Hrgovic, Kabayel etc all preferably styles for him which pay a lot of money and should be pure action.
Tell me what he learns from this fight? All it does for me is waste another 6 months of his valuable career time running out rapidly at 38 years of age. Would be better off getting a big money fight with Chisora instead then retire if he loses as really nowhere to go. Should he come through that, I would take the Dubois rematch. The Kabayel that I watched recently will stop him within 4-5 rounds.
