Benavidez was WBC world champion at SMW in 2017. He's now the WBC interim champion. For the last 3 years him and Canelo have been ranked 1 and 2. Why should we wait any longer? People saying let it marinate, for one that's the most stupid idea in sports and only exists in boxing, and for another 3 years is long enough.
He will start dropping them soon is my guess. For now they make for great negotiations and promotions. I do agree though, I don't like when fighters keep belts hostage. In the end though, everyone wants Canelo belts or no belts. But look, it hasn't even been one year since he defended his belts against Ryder. So after Jermall, if his next opponent isn't a top 168, I agree he should vacate or start getting stripped.
It is what it is. Benavidez just hit the spot light last year after beating Canelo leftover Plant, and then Boo boo. The fight will only get bigger as time passes. I don't like it, but it's what it is. Most of boxing is like this when there is big money.
No he hit the spotlight when he knocked out Anthony Dirrell 7 years ago to win a world title lol. The notion that a challenger can avoid his number 1 contender for years is absolutely pathetic.
Most of Canelo's opponents never hit the spot light ever before he fought them. Bivol was and still is a nobody. Ryder. Jermell was never a big name he does not even fight on PPV. Mall is a nobody. Kirkland, Rocky Fielding, you could go on and on. But apparently Benavidez needs to jump through 100 hoops to earn the fight. The fight is already over marinated. Canelo is 34 this year. One injury or loss from either fighter and the fight is down the toilet.
There's a big difference between a real boxing fan who was excited for DB when he destroyed Porky Medina, than a casual who first heard pf him when he beat a former Canelo opponent. The vast majority of money comes from casuals.
People like Canelo, Pacquiao, Mayweather, De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, even Joshua in England do not need their opponent to be mainstream to make big money, but if they are a household name it sure helps, and helps a lot. Just look at Canelo's PPVs against Lara, Trout, Kirkland, compared to his PPVs against Cotto, Chavez Jr., Golovkin, and obviously Mayweather.
The only household name he fought was Floyd. GGG was never a big draw but he was a pretty big name in boxing. They are the only ones. So thats 60 fights where he did not care about what you are arguing. Canelo does not need or care about names so its a bad argument. You are just trying to invent every excuse possible to defend Canelo ducking Benavidez. I swear its like a big cult when it comes to Canelo.
What??! What I said was that when Canelo fought a household name it generated a lot more money than when he fought top fighters mostly only known to boxing aficionados. Golovkin was definitely a household name, at least with the biggest boxing PPV consumers which are U.S. based Latinos. Benavidez is quickly becoming household name as well.
complete agree plus it’s as big as it’s going to get now, who can benavidez realistically fight now witch is going to make the fight commercially any bigger? Morrell? He’s not exactly got a big name at the minute and isn’t known to the casual audience.
He just thought Ryder then Charlo lol, neither of whom are bigger names than Benavidez in the division. He's about to fight another Charlo who again isn't a bigger name in the division.
In reality he should have fought Benavidez two years ago already, a third year without facing him will get increasingly embarrassing. Easily the biggest fight out there for him now in terms of legacy and probably money as well. He'll really sully his legacy if he runs from this.
You forgot the Cotto brothers. Had Benavidez upset Jaermall, we could have seen Canelo face both of them brothers as well. Mosley Jr. is highly ranked at 160. It would be hilarious if by some miracle he ends up fighting Canelo one day
Benavidez finally got his **** together in 2023 and should absolutely be the next fight. The only excuse to wait for September is because of the significance of said month. But 2022? Imo it´s fine that Canelo fought Bivol and Golovkin instead. And at least Ryder was a legitimate top contender.
