"Ring" Magazine said that Tyson was the best 6 round fighter ever...BUT...if he couldn't take his man out in 6 rounds...he starts to fall apart...he gets discouraged really fast...and that "Joe Louis would have discouraged Tyson really fast!"... Louis by KO...
I rate him high. During his best streak he went through Risko, Uzcudun (still in the late 20's), gave Stribling his only stoppage loss, and arguably should have gotten the nod against Sharkey in the rematch. Louis victory was only an icing on the cake. Well-prepared Pinklon Thomas is one of the 80's guys I would be tempted to put above Schmeling h2h, the very best of Witherspoon aside.
IMO Joe Louis would win this, would be dangerous but the sooner Joe lets his combinations combos counter Mikes aggressiveness the better, in this case the best defense would be a great but careful offense. Tyson is up there with the offensive monsters, and he took a tremendous punch, but Joe Louis was a great combo power puncher and had a better record of getting off the floor to win. Holyfield gave us the blueprint and the Brown Bomber may have gotten it done sooner.
Even if Louis makes it past 6 I can't see Tyson getting too discouraged since most likely Joe would have already been down a couple of times. If he couldn't handle Max's overhand rights how's he going to handle Tyson's lethal combo's
"If he couldn't handle Max's overhand rights how's he going to handle M. Baer's/B. Baer's/Galento's/Nova's/Walcott's lethal shots?" Remember Schmeling had to throw that right hand for 12 rounds to keep Louis down. You reckon Tyson is going to be able to pace himself like that? Where did you get the 20 lbs weight advantage? Prime Tyson was 215-218 lbs at his best performances. Louis was 200-207 lbs. They could realistically have a 20 lbs difference but it could also be as little as 8lbs.
Weight fluctuates but Tyson would be the heavier man which was the main point, also I think Mike would absorb Louis's best shots a lot better than Louis would absorb Mike's and if Kid Dynamite can land clean punches which he would do I can't see Louis holding up over 12 rounds
Schmeling is the most underrated fighter in HW history. Schmeling was robbed of the championship in the rematch against Jack Sharkey and was refused a title match after Braddock beat Max Baer because he was a German. He was the most technically sound HW next to Louis, a deadly counter-puncher and imo had the best defense. No shame in losing to a fighter of his calibre.
Mike was not his normal self against Douglas, he wasn’t training, unfocused and clearly distracted by the circus that surrounded him
Same goes for Louis against Schmeling. Louis didn't take that fight seriously either but you still hold that against him.
I disagree Joe had a weakness that Max exploited with his overhand right Joe-Max and Mike-Buster are complete opposites
You have multiple examples of Louis annihilating men with granite chins, sometimes sooner than 5 rounds. Mike will not be standing at a distance waiting to counter Louis's jab like Schmeling did. The fighting will happen fast and explosively at mid-close range. Louis is not only able to match Tyson's hand speed and power (the only heavyweight capable of doing so) but he also has the advantage of being able to fight backing away, letting Tyson come to him. Add his superior stamina and will to win and victory becomes more unlikely for Mike. Tyson is matched in offense and is the more limited of the two. If he wants to win he has to get Joe out of there quickly, and Mike will be absorbing shots himself everytime he gets close enough to engage. Both were caught underestimating their opponents, going into the fight undertrained and got broken down and knocked out. It's very similar actually. The difference is Louis grew from that experience and utterly annihilated Max in the rematch. Tyson never avenged his loss and yet he is the one who you are cutting slack for his shortcomings.
It’s not the same simply because Mike was barely training for the fight and overlooked Buster, Joe had a huge weakness that was brutally exploited totally different Out of the two I rate Louis as greater thanTyson but head to head I can’t see Louis beating him
