All true, but I've seen Dempsey give interviews in his seventies and as best I can tell he seems entirely unaffected. I've also seen an elderly Langford who seemed cognitively intact.
this is True, I am not a big man, 5' 8" 145 - 170 lbs throughout my life, not overly strong, but not weak either... I spent 12 years in Waste Disposal, filling up a 21 Cubic Yard hydraulic tipper container truck for 10 of those 12 years... I gave it up at 38 years of age, because I was "Work Done", to use an old Scottish phrase. Anyhow, where my muscle & strength gave out, I carried the weight & grind on my frame & joints, I'm still healthy & fit enough, nearly 64, but I am flipping soar daily, Bones & Joints. So yes, this is definitely true of many a Trade & Profession.
Roberto does seem to be an anomaly, fighting over 30 years and 119 fights and he's sharp as a tack. Reminds me of Archie Moore reciting poetry at 80 years of age. Some guys just take it better than others.
Preach brother, I worked in a piston foundry for years and it was seriously hard work. You made great money but there was a price to be paid as you said, aching bones and joints, as an old man once told me,, "Everything you hurt when you're young will return to hurt you again when you're old" You've heard the old saying "Hard work never killed anybody"? I'm certain it was a banker who coined that phrase.
“If a boxer ever went as crazy as Nijinsky all the wowsers in the world would be screaming ‘punch-drunk.’ Well, who hit Nijinsky? And why isn’t there a campaign against ballet? It gives girls thick legs.” -- the great A.J. Liebling
Yeah it’s true. I think part of what going on in simple terms is if a boxing career takes 30 points off your iq and you started with a iq of 100 you’re going to be in trouble. But if your iq was 120 or 130 you will be around normal. I bet Duran and Moore would have been mentally much better without being punched so much. But they were fortunate to be able to lose a lot mentally and still be good. And like you say some might be affected less by the punches with their thick necks, big heads and other possible factors.
Da Damn right, I'm on a Train right now as I type, travelling from Richmond to Eastham, spent three nights on a pull out bed in pure agony, Not the Bed, the flipping Bones & Joints .. Tell me about it, True PHYSICAL Hard Work absolutely Kills you. _uck the Bankers, the Doctors and the Politicians, let them have a 20 Year go of it
The documentary on the Quarry brothers is a tough watch, as is watching several of Jerry’s fights. Remarkably, Chuvalo always sounded unaffected, but reports in recent years, haven’t been good.
Forgot to mention Joe Joyce. A current interview with him regarding his fight in March, had him markedly hesitant. As well as asking for the questions to be repeated too many times, for comfort.
Unfortunately women boxing will take some time to assess. Women are far less able to function as alcoholics. they get much more injury when serving in the military etc . If they are less resistant to head trauma than men which would make sense in biological terms remains to be seen. Let's hope it doesn't happen
I tried watching the documentary After the Last Round it came up in my YouTube feed and they had Denny Moyer with canes and a helmet unable to talk or talk coherently and just a shell of a man. I could not finish it it was too disheartening to see
