Boxers who (seem to) have there health intact post career?

Id like to nominate Bob Foster as noteworthy. Mentally he seems razor sharp at least from what I can tell. Usual candidates for these threads are Archie, Jake, Foreman, Leonard, Dempsey - I hear Armando Muniz went on to teach and do other things after boxing but I’m not sure if he’s well I can’t find much. JCC and Duran of course don’t seem to show any signs of mental decline - De La Hoya is said to have coaching I’ve read to help manage his symptoms but I don’t have any evidence, it could just be a rumour otherwise he seems “well” as is Witherspoon and Holmes. I noticed Carmen Basilio seemed chipper and mentally well in interviews far into old age.

Then again Larry really didn't get hurt or take to many shots to the head due to his evasive maneuvers and keeping his opponents at an arms length.

 

Disagree on Larry, he seems senile now.

I saw a recent interview on youtube as well as the short interview at the Fury Ngannou circus, where he basically seemed preoccupied with his own greatness and nobody including mike tyson would have amounted to anything in his own era, basically not giving anybody else credit for anything and not even having an interest in discussing other fighters at all.
They asked him what he thinks about some of todays fighters and his answer was a slurred "i would woop them" and thats all he had to say about anything.

 

I hope he hasn't got the dementia, brain damage, whatever.
But what's the chances of him fighting all those years And not suffering any after effects really..

 

If you truly love the sport, you wouldn't want any fighter
regardless of personal dislike to have dementia .
Which is a terrible condition to end up with from
the sport.
After all, It's because of the violent nature of all of us
who enjoy the sport, fighters end up that way in
the 1st place.

Ted Lowry, even at 89, sounded quite sharp. This is the guy who had Marciano out, and ended up losing a controversial decision. His final record was 71-68-10.

Usually guys from weight classes below heavy -- Sugar Ray Leonard a key example.

That's of course in regards to guys who are older. Guys who've retired within the past decade or two (Andre Ward, Carl Froch, etc. etc.) seem plenty sharp.

 

Mike Weaver. Sounds great, looks great, seems to be AOK.

 

To be fair Holmes was always like that regarding other fighters etc. After Tyson beat him i'm sure he said he wouldn't beat guys like Cooney and Norton. I'd be more worried if he was any different lol

Thanks for posting that. Impressive, Ted Lowery seemed much younger than 89. Looked good shadow boxing in the parking lot too, it was obvious that he knew what he was doing, his hands and his body still moved together. He lost a lot of fights at the end of his career, I think the second page of his record on BoxRec he was 12-35-3, who knows how many of the losses were taken on short notice in the other guy's hometown? He was probably a hand full for most and if properly prepared a real test.

He was as sharp mentally as anybody. Do you know anything about what happened to him? Why he was in a wheelchair when he was at the Ct. HOF ceremony, shortly after the video was done, when he had been spryly getting on and off the school bus, and what caused his death a year or two after the video?

 

Unfortunately I don't know what happened with him. Hearing about the near-upset of Marciano a few years back is what brought him to my attention. Other than that, I know very little about him. Can't find video of any matches of his either.

For an 89 year old who had 149 pro fights under his belt, it really was remarkable what good condition he was in. Also, of his 68 losses, he was stopped only 3 times.
