Let's discuss matchmaking that, looking back, couldn't have been worse.

Gary Russell Jr. vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko:
Russell's management showed a safety first approach before and after this fight. It was calculated and methodical. They were presented an opportunity to fight for a vacant belt against a dangerous 1-1 fighter coming off a loss and took it. The Loma hype had diminished after the Salido fight and there were certainly easier belts to target. This loss completely derailed Gary's career.

    Kell Brook vs. Gennadiy Golovin:
This fight is insane. Golovkin was putting everyone to sleep and two weight classes north of Kell. I'm not sure if his management was fueled by coke ambition one night or they're just stupid. Brook was, predictably, damaged and ruined.

    Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch:
Bute knew he had a suspect chin. He chose to not enter the prestigious super six tournament despite being among the very top of the division at the time. When the dust settled, he decided to take on the runner up of the tournament who hit the hardest, in that fighters back yard. Why? He had a better chance trying to befuddle Ward with southpaw volume than eat right hands from Froch.

    Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz:
Did Eddie think he could trade one fattie in Miller for another in Ruiz and everything would go on seamlessly? Ruiz had an olympic level amateur career under a Cuban trainer and had fought on somewhat even terms with Parker. He clearly wasn't a late replacement kind of guy - he's a calculated title defense type of fighter. He was also CLEARLY better than the fighter he was replacing in Miller. Why would you replace the original fighter with a BETTER fighter? Add to this the pressure of fighting in a new country with a mentally fragile star and you have one of the greatest HW disasters of all time.

Why not? I don't know the history. I thought he opted out.

Still, fighting Froch in Nottingham seems really stupid.

David Reed against Trinidad. Why Reeds management thought it was a smart move to put a 14 fight pro in with a prime Trinidad is beyond stupid. Nobody and I mean nobody would have blamed Reed for passing on that fight at that time.

Khan v Prescott always seemed like an unnecessary disaster for me, pitching the slightly chinny up-and- comer against an unknown banger from Colombia. No need to take this one at all. And it obviously ended badly for Amir. Didn't his new trainer recommend the fight? Dont think he lasted long either ...

Yeah this one is wild. A COMPLETELY unknown massive puncher against one of the biggest prospects the UK had had in a while.

This reminded me of Golovking vs Munguia. The athletic commission shut it down and likely saved Munguia from a tremendous beating.
But wtf was Munguia´s team thinking? And ironically, he has been very carefully matched since then.

I think they wanted to prove a point, that being that Khan can take on punchers. So they chose so complete unknown who had a nice record.
    Whoops.

Curry vs Honeyghan.....Curry at that time was ranked the number 1 pound for pound boxer in the world,
Could have fought Hagler in a mega bout ( only made small money against Honeyghan )

Alberto Machado vs Andrew Cancio - Machado had largely feasted on sub par opposition, with nothing substantive to prepare him for Cancio, who knocked out the tough as nails Rene Alvarado, and got a UD over a past it Rocky Juárez, both of which wins were better than anything on Machado's record to that point.

    Then THEY TOOK THE REMATCH

EDIT: my bad, he knocked DOWN Alvarado and it was stopped on cuts a round or two later

From all accounts, Bute and his team were never involved in the initial talks at all. Either the S6 head(forgot his name) has some personal issues with Interbox, or he simply was not confident that Bute and his side would work with the confines of the tournament. You know, travel to the opponents backyard and so on. Jokes on them if that was the case because Andre Ward decided to do his thing.
Froch looked like doo-doo in the Ward fight, lost to Kessler and struggled with Johnson. Bute in his last fight completely dominated Johnson.
I honestly think to this day that they simply underestimated Froch. They thought they would pick off where Ward let things and simply smash their way through into a mega fight with Ward.

For me they're all good matchmaking.

    Boxing is too soft FFS.

Good info, thanks. I get that they had a plan, but usually when a guy fights at home all the time it's because he gets anxious travelling. This clearly appeared to be the case with Bute who had pretty much only fought in his back yard (and apparently was so fixed on his back yard that the Super Six didn't happen for him). His team also knew he had chin issues. Makes the choice to face a puncher in Froch in his back yard suspicious, especially when it's do or die for Froch's career.

They're all good fights, it's just interesting when a boxers management is safety first but then makes one or two insane gambles.

There were some talks about Interbox looking to sign with HBO but it was never verified. Seems more like a theory in hindsight than what actually happened.

A real shame too. And sucks that Ward was such a diva, because SHO was setting up the S6 winner vs Bute.
