Prime Joe Louis vs Rocky Marciano?

Prime Joe Louis ? Takes Marciano apart, he might make it to the mid rounds if his face holds up and there's no 3 knock down rule. Rocky gets dropped here, "and I'm sure he would, but this time when he rises there's no 41 year old Moore or 38 year old Walcott coming for him. It's the brown bomber and Louis blitzes him with vicious combos.

Of course, Goldman here is assuming Louis would turn into a Joe Frazier style of fighter and try to slug it out with Rocky.

Thankfully we have footage of prime Louis fighting aggressive sluggers and can see that Louis would stay at a range where he could punch and use his feet to move in and out of that range.

The way he backs up as Godoy is trying to rush in so he can unload his uppercuts is one example.

 

Considering how quickly he smashed the granite chins of Uzcudun, Baer and Braddock, I don't think Marciano can survive that long. It's not like he's going to start dancing away when he gets into trouble.

But from what I've seen, when two big punchers collide the fight tends to be short.

 

They only fight once a year and the rules have changed drastically from the old days. Nowadays safety is more important than competition.
If you include Louis' amateur career and the exhibitions he boxed during the war, he had close to 300 bouts. How many fighters get up to 100?

 

The argument could be made, but China chin Klitschko had well over 60 and was still fighting at a high level into his 40s just for comparisons sakes

That's because the "fighters" of today don't fight as often as they did in the 1940's and 1950's

 

And when Louis gets up, there is no 2 Ton Toney or Buddy Baer coming for him.

 

I would like to think that a much faster and sharper version of Louis could break down rocky and win.. and he might.. but Marciano’s style, power and persistence would always make him a tough opponent for Joe Louis.
