Did Roy Jones Jr. really lose to Montell Griffin in their first fight?

  1. Yes, if you hit a boxer who is down, you deserve to be disqualified.

  2. No, this is a classic case of shady refereeing and Oscar level acting by Griffin

Was the disqualification fair? Or was Roy Jones Jr. robbed of a victory? Or was it too early to make such a claim? Remember, it took just one round for Jones to decimate Griffin in the rematch.

First things first: It wasnt the ref but New Jersey State Athletic Commissioner Larry Hazzard who disqualified Jones Jr.

Second thing: Jones said on the record ''After looking at the tape, I would have disqualified myself after I saw what happened..."

Jones hit him twice while he was down and a ruling was made in that moment.

Boxers and Champions are held to a higher standard than you or I. Yes Griffin tried for an Oscar with his performance but it doesn't change the fact the he got hit TWICE, not once, while down.

Was a shame as Roy wasn't a dirty fighter, just a guy who made two mistakes.

Griffin was fighting well beforehand too. This was a legit loss, even if Roy was likely headed to a KO win. Roy was down on one card, barely up on the others and he hit a guy illegally. If he didn't do that, yeah, he would have won. But he did, so he didn't. People act like the first fight was their second fight, just longer and Roy was somehow robbed completely. Not the case.

    Fair is fair.

    Roy Jr was rightfully DQ’d.

He got a rematch. He corrected the first result emphatically.

    Life goes on.

It was a legit DQ absolutely.

What annoys me still is that Riddick Bowe did virtually the same thing to Buster Mathis Jnr at around the same time yet escapes with a NC instead of a deserved DQ loss. And Bowe had a history of being a dirty fighter unlike Roy.

You can throw Terry Norris vs SRL in that category except Norris actually ran across the ring to slug Ray when he was down (although to be fair Norris actually was DQ’d in other fights).

Man you know I respect Terry but he hit quite a few boxers on the ground.
Leonard,Curry, he clearly hit them while they were down. He popped Curry clear as day as Curry was down.

He was very emotional in the ring I always thought. He’d get over excited when he had someone down and couldn’t stop himself. His first loss was a DQ from belting someone, he was whipping, while they were down as well.

You can add Big George to Joe Roman as well. That was as brutal as it was unnecessary and illegal.

Fair DQ and the only way Griffin was going to get home as Jones was coming on.

Yes, Jones certainly was coming on, and was well on his way to a 2-point round, or a KO win had he not lost control. Griffin fought well, and troubled Jones more than anyone else had up to that point, but that fight turned in the 9th and he was on his way to an L.

It crossed my mind to make a similar thread on whether Michael Grant should have won the Unified Heavyweight Championship on a foul vs. Lewis. Would have been only the second time a Heavyweight title changed hands on a DQ off the top of my head. Seemed there was a case to be made...

Zarate deserved the rematch - I think he’d have won.

Totally fair. Competitive fight, Roy finally had his moment and lost his cool.

and yea Riddick Bowe totally deserved to be Dq’d against Mathis Jr. In fact it was ruled that before it was overturned by Larry Hazzard in a clear case of corrupt politics.

He also hit Tillery after the bell, and Tillery got the DQ!

Someone mentioned that Coetzer could have been a DQ, too, but I don't remember the details.
