Did Roy Jones Jr. really lose to Montell Griffin?

Legit DQ. But how anyone could have Griffin ahead on the scorecards is beyond me. He was spoiling Jones' work, but he had done almost nothing himself, basically no clean effective punching at all on his part, and he wasn't better than Jones in defense or ring generalship.

 

It's been a while since I've seen the fight but, from memory, I recall it being a fair DQ. And I'm a big Jones fan.
Griffin was frustrating him, though I never felt Jones was in danger of losing. But he was annoyed and struck Montell when he was down. He obviously corrected things emphatically in the rematch - one of Roy's best performances. That was, for a long time, his only legit loss.

 

Roy earned that DQ. He drilled him, he actually measured and pin pointed that last shot.......................I love Roy, but that was crazy.

 

Montell was giving him fits all night, then Roy lost his cool in frustration when he finally caught up to him. At the time, I thought Montell milked it because Roy was starting to come on and he knew he would have been stopped had he gotten up.

There were two punches when Griffin was clearly down. The first shot was more grazing, but the second looked like it did land.

Only Griffin knows how hard it was and whether he faked it or not.

 

Yes it was a fair disqualification and there should be a firmer line on fouls. This was not a case of a punch that had been thrown as the guy was in the process of going to the canvas, Jones paused, observed and then threw them.

 

Yes it was a boxer named Joe Walker I believe and man he clocked him literally while Walker was on his knees lol.

Griffin was a very good boxer. Didn't if beat Toney ? Or did i dream it

I've watched this about 3 different times. How the **** did Jones deserve a DQ before even a warning? This is the fight right here in 720p.

The referee should of called a knockdown as soon as Griffin hit the ground at 41:49 . Jones was solely focused on Griffin's head, he had no idea Griffin even took a knee from the damage he was taking in round 9. Those two soft ass punches Jones landed after hardly caused any damage, the first punch barely landed and the 2nd punch was partially blocked since the referee had pushed Jones to the side to stop the momentum. that was the worst acting job I've ever seen from a boxer. The fight should of been a no contest if anything. Imagine Rocky Marciano getting DQ'd vs Walcott in the 1st fight cause he landed another soft punch after Walcott was down.

 

I watched the Norris vs Waters fight last night and Terry slugged him on the top of the head while he was down too. He was a recidivist lol

 

Was a while since I saw it, but you can't argue against that he did clearly and intentionally hit him when he was down, but of course those things usually get a slide. If the rules were enforced strictly, boxing history would look quite different.

But a second punch on a downed opponent is pushing it, though, so that could be it. On the other hand, if Griffin doesn't go for the Nicholas Cage award for overacting...

Anyhow, I don't think Roy has anyone to blame but himself. He had no excuse for hitting him like that and had to be prepared to pay the consequences.

 

He was having hard time with Coetzer - Bowe was winning but Coetzer was game and Bowe got frustrated and started firing low blows which totally ruined Coetzer

 

It was a fair DQ, so techncially it is a loss. However, Griffin never truly beat Jones in the ring
