Where is Carmen Basilio? How can you make a list of great middleweights, talk about their chins and not mention Basilio?
The answer to your question is in the very first line of the very first post. So it’s about the quality of the chins of the top 40 greatest middleweights, which I don’t think you could really include Basilio amongst.
Love Basilio though and he had a fantastic chin, of course. But funnily enough, his only two stoppage defeats came at middleweight (against Gene Fullmer). If @McGrain does one for ATG welterweights, he’ll be there for sure and I’d be voting Titanium for him!
Hi Jel. Me too, one of my all time favs, remember a old Ring mag previewing his first fight against DeMarco, it said , " the hardest punch in the division against the hardest chin, who will come out on top " well we know, when I am in the dentist chair, I go to my WW match up Basilio v Palomino, battle of the chins maybe, either to win by 15 decision , who you fancy ? stay safe buddy, chat soon.
Oh yeah, that’s a great matchup, Mike! Basilio tends to get characterised as a brawler but he worked off his jab well. Palomino was a notoriously slow starter but was a true 15 round fighter who built momentum over the second half of a fight. Honestly, I don’t know who would win but, like you, I don’t think anyone is getting stopped. I have an inkling that Basilio just edges it on overall workrate but it would be a fun fight.
I just stumbled onto this thread yesterday. I finally finished the 23 pages and feel like reading it again. Enjoyable, informative, quality and 1 drop of humor (Hopkins being 60 yrs old when stopped). Not sure if the thread is completely finished but ill hit the watch thread button just incase it isent.
