How many title fights did John Ruiz actually win?

    John Ruiz's title fights:

    * Lost to Evander Holyfield by unanimous decision. The commentators felt it was a robbery, I thought it was a clear, honest and correct decision.

    * Beat Evander Holyfield by unanimous decision. Ruiz was better for the majority of the bout, but at one point in the fight, he possibly feigned a low blow, taking additional time to recover in the process.

    * Drew Evander Holyfield by a split decision. I thought Holyfield won, as did many observers.

    * Defeated Kirik Johnson by disqualification. Johnson was disqualified for repeated low blows. Some blows were low for real, but I don't think Johnson deserved to be disqualified.

    * Lost to Roy Jones Jr by unanimous decision. Nothing to discuss here, clear loss.

    * Defeated Fres Oquendo by TKO. Clear win in my opinion for Ruiz despite an ugly fight and some controversy.

    * Defeated Andrew Golota by unanimous decision. One of the biggest robberies in heavyweight title history. Ruiz should have lost by unanimous decision.

    * No contest against James Toney. Toney was declared winner by UD first but failed a drug test.

    * Lost to Nikolay Valuev by majority decision. I thought Ruiz won this fight.

    * Lost to Nikolay Valuev by unanimous decision. Though the decision was unpopular, Valuev won this in my opinion. Ruiz was past it at this point.

    * Lost to David Haye by TKO. Ruiz was washed up and got smoked.

How many title fights do you think Ruiz won? I would say three - the second fight against Holyfield, the fight against Oquendo and the first fight against Valuev.

P.S. Ruiz also lost an IBO title fight against Danell Nicholson. I have not watched that one.

Ruiz never legitimately "won" a fight against a decent opponent without holding excessively; faking "low blows" like he did against Jimmy Thunder to get a crucial point deduction, Holyfield in their second fight to avoid being counted out (as should have happened) and against Kirk Johnson to get a thoroughly bogus DQ.; or without getting some help from Don King's judges, such as the outrageous gift decision he received against Golota in a fight where he was outlanded, knocked down twice and got another point deducted, and yet somehow got the nod!!

Without Don King, Ruiz is a regional beltholder (NABF, USBA, etc.) - at best - who is known for being starched by David Tua in 19 seconds. He's the poster boy for boxing corruption, a shameful cheater who deserves to be remembered as exactly that and nothing more.

The only title fight he won clearly, albeit sloppily, was Holyfield 2.

What about the fight against Rahman? Not a title fight, but did hugging bear not win that one?

I agree that he won that. Havent watched most of the others.

I will say, contrary to popular belief, I thought the above mentioned fight was pretty exciting.

It was indeed exciting. It resembled a mixed martial arts fight - with boxing, hugging, clinching, pushing and wrestling. The fight was of poor quality, but exciting nevertheless.

Golota getting the decision is an interesting what if.

In his next fight he challenges Brewster for the WBO.

If the same happens then that becomes a unification fight with the WBA and WBO on the line.

Alternatively Golota might decide on a couple of gimme defenses, and then who knows what?

As I said, he used excessive holding against everyone he fought who was remotely decent. If the rules had been properly enforced, he would have been DQd in that fight and many others. But his connections with King ensured that wouldn't happen.

He won them all and more. He beat Valuev and Chagaev. There is a good argument he controlled Jones to at least a draw. And he certainly won the Holyfield fight. And he should have received a standing 8 against Tua when he was against the ropes. He would have gone on to beat Tua down.

Rahmah fight as well, although it was for interim title. And I think he beat Valuev twice

I think he beat Valuev twice. Then again, Valuev was ugly like hell, slow, uncoordinated, clumsy giant who happened to have Don King on his side at that time, he was circus freak show who earned more money for Don and Sauerland compared to unspectacular and rather average beltholder John Ruiz.

On the other hand, Ruiz got some gift decisions. He faked low blows in the Holyfield and Kirk Johnson fights (though Johnson hit him low a few times), that helped him a lot. Golota fight was a robbery.

Toney easily won against Ruiz, despite being very fat and out of shape. Jones won probably every round.

Man... Ruiz... He simply "survived" guys. I have a feeling he would survive Mohammed Ali too! Win lose or draw, both men would be standing after an ugly affair.

Matter of fact Mohammed had the gift of gab to help throw off his opponent. I don't think the quiet man would take any of that, he wasn't much of a hothead kept his cool. Stoney I'd be worried about though, falling into Ali's trap. Which would cause Ruiz to lose some of his cool because THAT would affect him. How many times did Muhammad Ali win the fight solely on boxing? Heck there would be out of the ring intimidation just like Mike Tysony as well was the same way lol.

I'd expect Golota to have been put in with Toney if he beat Ruiz.

Golota vs Toney would have been a fun fight for the press conference alone. I could see JT talking all kinds of **** and antagonizing all of the Polish fans that no doubt would have shown up for this fight. I think Toney would have put it on Golota.
