Let's see...A guy who was Heavyweight Champion of the world from 1937 to 1949...25 title defenses...a bona fide hero...or a guy who's title run consisted of 2 quick first round KO's of "china chinned" Floyd Patterson in 1962 and 1963...then as Champ in Feb. 1964 in Miami...he QUITS WHILE SITTING ON HIS STOOL against the light hitting Cassius Clay...and then takes a DIVE in the first round against Ali up in Maine in May 1965!!! Gee...let me think on this a while...tough decision...
One boxers achievements can be greater but that doesn't mean in a head to head they would come out on top. Liston literally cleaned out the division en route to the title and lost to arguably the greatest Heavyweight in history in his prime. Are you suggesting Louis would have beaten that version of Ali! How long would Sonny have been on top if Ali didn't come round at least until Frazier and even then Sonny Liston vs Joe Frazier would be a toss up
Frazier in 1969/1970 would beat old Liston like a drum, if Leotis Martin knocked him out I could just wonder what would prime Frazier do to him.
I would not be surprised if he does, FOTC Frazier would for sure have a huge chance beating prime Liston. Liston is not Foreman and that is not past prime Frazier who was fat like the one when he fought Foreman.
For Frazier to get close enough to land the body shots and hooks he would have to eat some serious leather and I can't see him lasting into the later half of the fight which is where it would be won for him, shame this fight never happened would have been a war
Well Leotis got close and landed some body blows and he is not Frazier not close, he is smaller and less aggressive. Same would go for prime Frazier but after the fight Frazier face would look like hamburger even tho he would win against Liston.
I'm not sure why you keep bringing up Leotis he fought a shot Liston who was probably over 40 not the same fighter that crushed Patterson
Because Leotis was just contender and not a great one plus he was LHW so yeah that is why I am bringing Leotis.
That's like bringing up Ali's loss to Berbick or Tyson's loss to bloody Danny Williams completely irrelevant and misses the point of the argument, would Frazier have beaten this shot version of Liston absolutely without question. Would Frazier have beaten the Liston who KO'd Patterson in 1 I don't think so or at least it would have been a very close hard fought fight.
Liston comes out bombing but Louis' higher ring IQ keeps him out of range. Sonny sees he can't quite reach Louis with the flush so he goes into boxing mode. The 10th round or so of this fight would be really interesting, Louis with his powerful combinations, Liston with the jab and hook. A UD for Louis, but I see Liston winning 6 out of 15. Joe would end up making a survivor out of Sonny, the former was just too good for this not to happen imo.
